i finally got power so i can post this. Last week my town lost power due to storms. I lost most of my fish. i lost 3 rb piranhas, 1 arrowana, 3 oscars, 2 angels, 10 neon tetras, 4 hatchet fish, 2 firemouths, 5 jaghorns, 2 pleco. and lots of feeders. I saved all of my 17 discus 1albino oscar and a silver dollar huge fish loss:cry:

sorry to hear, thats pretty sad.

I don't know how far you are from Cedar Rapids, but I've talked to a few people who haven't had power since Saturday and might not have it back until the middle of next week. I was talking to someone whose friend has a 125g saltwater setup with lots of live coral and expensive fish, the coral's dying without the lights and there's not much hope for the rest either.

Sorry about your loss, that really sucks. At least you saved your discus'!

Sorry!

i had a power out-age a few weeks ago, it only lasted 11 hrs (not days). my only saving grace was (2) UPS and the air pump. the backup didn't last the 12 hrs (it lasted about 8), but it was enough to save my tanks.

anyone have any better ideas?

If you don't mind the noise, fumes and the constant refilling of gasoline... you can go for a generator.

Yeah it's rite, you should have a Power Generator or something like that if you tend to keep expensive fish.

I live up by Mason City. We were out for 36 hours straight. Luckily enough we still had hot water. I did waterchanges every 6-8 hours. Had to have the water pretty warm to keep the temps up. 13 tanks and a little over 70 fish and somehow got lucky enough to not lose any. Almost lost scats and monos by falling asleep (slacking on the waterchanges). Was not a fun weekend, but could have been worse. Just east of here got hit pretty bad.

Towards the end of this fiasco my girlfriend's dad stopped by with a generator. Wired it in 1/2 hour before power came back on. It made a temporary home on the porch for a while. :)

I definetly never thought something like that would happen. I don't remember the last time we lost power for more than a few hours.
