yeah so i made the mistake of using white gravel in the substrate of my 90g. The white gets dirty real easy and i dont like to look at it. So can i make a quick switch and remove all the gravel and replace it with sand? If so do i have to use sand from my LFS or is there any cheap stuff i can use? Thanks!

ok well is the tank cylced??? if it is take a small amount of gravel out at a time. then when its all replace with pool filter sand cheap and easy make sure you wash well though

bye a net with large holes then remove a net full a day and replace with a mug full of sand. that way you only remove the gravel and all the sand stays in, thats what i did in a 55, it took approx 3 - 4 weeks and i got no ammonia spike and all fish were fine

In my 150 gal, I switched from gravel to sand.

I used King's Play sand which I got at Home Depot for like $4.00 a bag, it is washed beach sand so it is safe to use with filters because it is heavy enough and my fish love it and it looks natural.

I just put my fish in the bath tub (my temp tank lol) then pulled out about 80-90% of my gravel, then put the sand in the tank and filled it up again...

Not that hard and I didnt even have a mini cycle

yeah the tanks cylced its been up for a year. so basically i take out a patch of gravel and fill it with sand and make my way across the tank slowly is that what your saying?

yes you can do that, but you could do it all at once...

So you got white gravel but don't like it, and you want to replace it with sand? I would use pool filter sand, because it is large grain and very clean. Its an off white color though, so if you want black sand, I'm not sure what you can get.
