Check if the sounds are enabled in the bios...at start-up you can get in the bios, there you will see a line, sounds enabled or disabled. Don't change any other things in there if you don't know what your doing.
This is a forum where you can get help on aquarium issues, in particular problems with larger systems. Would you ask a landscaper how to repair your air conditioner?
My advice is that you find a computer forum and get their help. You will likely get to the bottom of the problem and get a resolution much faster.....just a sugestion.
Go to compaq.com and look for something on the top that says "get support" and click on that. Then on the left it will ask to enter a task. Click the "software and driver downloads" then enter sr1020nx in for the product number. Then click on the "Microsoft WindowsXP". Then click on the one under Driver-Audio. Then click on the red box that says "download only>>". Then once its downloaded just install the driver. If that doesn't work then the sound card is broken.
