Noisy Emperor 400

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found that fluvals products are hit of miss. Ive had problems with 400 being loud and ive had some old ones stay quiet for years. They also have big problems with micro bubbles on their Fx5. They also had problems with their 404 canisters tops poping off durring power shortages. Im trying to get away from fluval. Its hard because they have some high flow filter for realativly cheep.

Best answer.....enhim canister. Give up on HOB filters. Canisters are so much better.

Emperor 400s are made by Marineland, not Fluval.

Do you have a sand substrate? I had 2 penguin 350b's and after about 3 months they got noticeably louder. I took them apart and found the impeller and its housing badly worn away by bits of sand. I came to the conclusion that the impeller was loose in its housing and flopping around while running? If you have sand you might wanna look into that.

I also had a 400. After a few months it got noisy and lost power (in a tank without sand). Side by side I think my 350's pump out more water then the 400 of similar age.

IMO I think you get what you pay for. The 400's seem to be the cheapest hob's you can get for the flow rate but the quality is garbage, even the 350's I'm not happy with. Spend a bit more and get a canister filter. My Fluval Fx5 is by far the best filter I've ever owned. It's so quite I need to put my ear within a few feet of it to hear it running and the duel movable outputs can really cut down on tank maintenance when you position them right. :naughty:

Most of the problems w/ fx5 are user error, same with any filter, ive had xp4's ac110's and fx5's never ever had even a slight problem, micro bubbles can be caused by many different reasons, mainly using a polishing pad and it getting clogged, if the directions are followed and the filter is well maintained and cleaned on a regular basis it shouldnt have a problem.

Some people have their bubblers right next to the siphon and they wonder why they have air in it! Lol

I swear by my fx5!
