noisy overflow

When I had a 72bow front with built in overflow I stacked sponges on the inside of the overflow wall so the water went through those instead of cascading down the side (which is where the noise is coming from) Much quieter. Mine wasn't just a hole in the bottom though. It had a stand pipe with notches cut in it, covered with a round pre-filter sponge. It still needed the other sponges to keep it quiet though.

My 125G has overflow boxes like yours. I cut a piece of egg crate to fit in the bottom, filled with bio balls, topped with a sponge and filter floss. Besides being dead quiet it increased the capacity of the sump (working like 2 bio towers) been running like this for over a year with no problems. Just change the floss on top when doing your maintenance.

my overflows are loud too but i dont want to put anything in them.

Is there a DIY guide to a durso stand pipe?
