Does anyone have any suggestions for non rift lake, non "chromis" Dwarf African cichlids? I tried looking but couldn't come up with much.

African butterfly cichlids are a cute fishie! Also Steatocranus if you like something exotic ;)

Butterfly cichlids - Anomalochromis thomasi are great little cichlids. Not sure if you would classify them as non-chromis

You could look into soda lake cichlids. Alcolapia alcalica Alcolapia ndalalani
Perhaps you could look at the Steatocranus genus - "block-head" cichlids
Teleogramma are another interesting ,albeit difficult to find and somewhat so to keep, species to look at. I have heard they can be costly if you can find them.

Pelvicachromis and associate species are interesting dwarf cichlid comparable to Tanganican cave dwellers except for more color and greater conspecies tolerance. Unfortunately, only Pelvicachromis pulcher, Kribensis, are commonly available.

Here is Alcolapia alcalicus because it was mentioned above.

The water in Lake Natron where it comes from can be more saline, than the ocean. Below a pair spawning.

Another of my favorites, from a non-rift lake is Stomatepia pindu, from Lake Barumbi mbu. The white spots are cephalic pits that help it to find prey, in the substrate.

It can handle neutral to soft water.

And from Lake Bermin, another favorite Coptodon bythobates

Are these your fish?
I do not often get fish envy but holy crapsticks!!! I want.

Steatocranus, aka lionhead cichlids. One of the many fish on my wish list. If only my lfs got them in....

They were mine, after a number of spawns from each pair, I gave pairs and progeny away to interested aquarists. The Alcolapia went in a box swap trade to Wash DC, the Coptodon to an ACA member in Sy Louis, and the pindu in Milwaukee.
