Ok so here's the long and the short of it.
My wife keeps Red Eared Sliders at our store. A customer brought in a small RES that we adopted but it was getting beat up by her turtles. We decided to bring it home so I bought a new tank for it and it was small enough that I decided to keep a JD with it. I have never kept fish before but it did pretty well. We took the RES back to the store so now I had a 20 gallon long tank with a single JD.
I decided that I loved cichlids and did a tiny bit of research before I found a deal I couldn't refuse on craigslist for a 90 gallon including a Fluval 405 filter. Purchased. Next thing to come was building a DIY BG. After a week of prep, a month of building, created my BG

So being new and falling hard for the hobby, I cycled the tank (probably incorrectly), seeded it with the filter that I had, and added my JD. Then I began a spree of purchasing fish which I probably shouldn't have but now the tank holds 1 JD, 1 EBGJ, 2 Salvini, 1 Arowana, 1 FH, 4 Silver Dollars, 3 Bala Sharks, 1 pair Electric Blue Crayfish, and 2 Chinese Algae Eaters.
Obviously falling quick/hard for the hobby, did a little more research and decided my end goal was to breed Salvini, & find, keep, and breed Festae. I found another deal on CL for a 180 gallon aquarium including 2 FX5's. This tank is just sitting in my garage waiting for my basement to be finished.
I then went out and bought a 40 gallon aquarium intending it to be a growout/breeder. Purchased 10 Festae fry online which have arrived and are flourishing. (BTW is a AC110 on a 40 gallon aquarium too much?)

Now comes the fortuitous problem...
Everything is great, 180 waiting, 90 with perfect water and fish that are getting along fairly well, 40 with 10 Festae fry eating well then...

I originally had thought that my 2 Salvini were coloring up but that they were both male. They had locked lips a couple times but I really didn't think anything of it. Apparently it turns out that one is male and one is female and that they have paired up and laid eggs. What do I do? This is what I wanted but I thought it would be after doing more research, having more experience with cichlids, and being more prepared. Keep in mind I do have a 20 gallon long, should I start cycling it? Am I supposed to move Salvini or eventual fry?
I'm happy but I'm lost, what do I do? I'm only about 2 months into the hobby and basically all the info I've gotton has been from here. PLEASE HELP!

lmao wow i wish i had your luck when i started the hobby and wanted to breed convicts. ok so you have successfully breed salvinis  now first to know are there any fish in the tank with them? if not leave them alone let their fry develop but watch them with in 4 or 5 days the eggs will hatch and they will be wigglers. in about a week or so they will be free swimming at this time see if they still have their yolk hanging on their belly . if they dont then go to your locale fish store and buy fry food witch is ground up flakes or get a coffee grinder (only for doing this not making coffee) and grind up flakes finely for the fry. some times the parents will chew up the flakes n spit them out for the fry,. do small water changes weekly and be careful you dont suck up fry. you should be fine after that . i think you should find another home for the other fish or have a separate tank away from the fish you in tend to breed. maybe put the salvinis and fry in the 20 long or get another 40 breeder for them . also make sure you have a filter that will not suck up your fry a undergravel filter , sponger filter or any other filter that works like those work great for breeding tank cause it moves the water thru the filter by an air pump

were did you buy your festaes from?

Ok so I do have other fish in the tank, I listed what I have in each tank so there's plenty of other guys in there. I don't know why but I feel like the 20 Long would be a waste because it is so small, and I don't have anything for it; stand, top, light. But I have been busy on CL yet again looking for a setup that will work and is worth buying. I bought some Festae from americancichlids.net and some from cichlidsoftheamericas.com
I, having only been in the hobby a couple months, have not had experience buying online but I do know americancichlids.net is in Colorado and they're reputable here. I took a chance on cichlidsoftheamericas.com, and the guy I have been in contact with there has been amazing. The shipment arrived on time but maybe USPS wasn't so nice with the package because it was leaking. 2 were DOA and the rest were quite shaken from the trip, I hopitalized them and lost a couple more, he sent me 1 more than I lost just in case and took care of the shipping. So personally I think they're both great.

oo ok in my opinion all these will create a problem Arowana Silver Dollars Bala Sharks, 1 pair Electric Blue Crayfish, and 2 Chinese Algae Eaters if u intend to let them breed .they will all kill off the fry as they grow , the algae eaters will eat the eggs if not guarded well enough. how big are the salvinis the 20 long might not be a waste jus get a nice little sponge filter or under gravel filter is cheap i bought one for my 29gal for like $12 in petco.

im fairly new to the hobby too, i had my first tank about a yr or so ago , ive done the shipping thing to i bought some convicts on aquabid.com and had them shipped thru usps and when they arrived there was no water in the bags but luckly they were still alive with barely an shot glass of water in the bag but they lived.

So sponge filter....best one? Where to purchase?

i mean every one has their own opinion on wuts the best but those are the best filters for breeding cause the fry cant get sucked up , u could do like i do on my ac 70. take a sponge for a 50 or 70 ac filter and cut a hole big enough for the sponge to slide over the intake it works as a prefilter

Ok so I've struck another deal on CL to buy, yet again, another 40g breeder. It comes with a bunch of stuff which I'll probably use but I think I'll buy another AC HOB, seed it with my media, and go the sponge route. Thanks for all the help, I love this site I think I'll be on here quite often because I don't know if I can slow myself down. I'll keep you posted.

oo ok cool and no problem glad i could help
