noob I need help

Would it be ok to just go bare bottom in my tank or still go with sand and is pool filter sand a good way to go?

Yeah bare bottom is fine dude.

Pool filter sand works, just dont use play sand. I personally use "sand" from petco... I've had good success from it and you can get colors. Make sure to rinse it adequately before hand, and during your weekly water changes stir the send slightly to release any oxygen. If you don't it can and will turn into a poisonous gas

Right now tank has just about nothing in it but gravel a small cave and a small peace of driftwood that I always move when I clean the gravel. Would I need more bio-rings if I go bare bottom tank or would I be ok

Definitely over-crowding. But just do a 50% water change two or there times over a week or two and it should be good.
