Hey guys, so this is probably the easiest question and stupidist thing to ask when you are a fishkeeper but how do you clear up water?! I always have clear water until i picked up a 100 gallon tank. The water was clear at first then after a couple months it turned green. I have a substrate of sand and no plants. But i used to have bamboo in the tank. The fish are a Jardini aro and a motoro pup. I already did a 80 percent water change and i don't really trust the chemical stuff so any suggestions? Also the chemical levels are all neutral and all perfect. Except the Ph which is 7.6 but that is still good and won't harm the fish. Filters are clean and whenever food that isn't eaten i watch and scoop them out after about 5-8 minutes.

Green water is a type of algae. Best way to handle it would be to install a UV on the tank. Otherwise, you could try a complete blackout for a few days to try to kill it.

Does the tank get direct sunlight? What kind of lights do you have? How long are they on everyday?

X2 ... that pH seems fine to me as long as it is stable! Mine is even higher, but as long as it's stable is the key. I keep my 125g tank away from sunlight and rarely have the lights off and am good to go.

Mine has about half a day of sunlight, and the light is florecence and runs for a couple hours at night. When i go sleep though i turn it off. Can i just use those tablets or chemical to kill them? Even with a pleco though it won't go away, it happened and i had a pleco but the water stayed green...

if its a common pleco, it won't eat algae most likely anyway. It's in the water. Not easy for anything to latch on to...

Take all the light away for a while.

I have the same problem. It happened to me a few days after my tank cycled. Gonna try the black out for now. Dont wanna dose with medication as to it might kill some beneficial bacteria too

If you don't want to buy a UV then do a blackout. But if your tank is getting sunlight then it will likely just come back. Best to either move the tank out of the sun or buy a UV.

:( okay so this thing won't go away unless i buy a UV or blackout. How much is a UV? Oh and will this plant? hurt my fish, or can it help as plants can sometimes filter chemicals.

Running UV would help but the cost of running and replacing those bulbs are pricy, a problem if you own multiple tanks. I know most of members here are against chemicals but I recommand you get Blagdon barlet extract if you can find one. A half dose can usually kill of the algae and it doesn't harm your fishes.
