Hi guys. Im really new to piranhas in general. I want to keep them in my 120g. The filtration will be a fluval fx5 and a emp400. I have alot of questions so here goes:

How many P's can i keep in my tank? This will be for long term.

What kind of food should i feed them as juvies? Then what do i feed them as they get bigger?

How should i decorate their tank? With plants and driftwood?

What should the Ph be? Around 6.8-7?

Amy help would be great.

what's the foot print of your tank? and which species of piranhas do you want to keep? number of fish depends on the answers to the above questions.

as for food once they are 2-3" you can start feeding shrimp, fish fillets, etc. they are born with teeth so you don't have to worry about them eating things larger than what they can swallow, sometimes they'll even eat those at 1" or so.
take a look at this sticky in the mean while.

the ph you listed is good and as for decorate the tank, it depends on what you like to look at. personally I like driftwood and plants (real plants). spend some time look at the setups in piranha media section to get an idea what kind of setup you want to go for.

as usual. JP hit the nail on the head.

Pretty much a perfect answer. Id suggest red bellied piranha if it's your first time keeping piranha. They are cheaper than the other varieties, hardy, and easy to find compared to other species. With Red bellied piranha and a standard 4x2x2' 120g you could probably get away with 6-7 maybe one or two more because of good filtration provided by the fx5 and emp400.

Other kinds of piranha are just as hardy as rbp.I would get Macs If I were you. They're not shy n actually quite aggressive n very beautiful fish also, n they're only couple $$$ more than rbp.

Macs are awesome. I love mine.

Srry for the late reply, was tired and fell asleep on my couch. Anyway i was thinking about rbps. They're the only species of p's in my area except for black piranhas.

My footprint is kind of weird. Its 60x18x26. Its a 5ft instead of a 4ft. I think the extra length will benefit me better.

Also im against feeding piranhas live food like mice and goldfish so buying food from the supermarket would be awesome.

The extra length is indeed a good thing.

I don't agree with them being born with teeth. Come on Jp you don't really believe that do you?

i'm sure that they do just too small for us to see.
