Long story but bear with me:) My roommate bought one of those walmart complete kits for setting up a 10gal tank. All 5 guys in the house went on a crazy "lets go buy fish randomly" phase for about a week and placed them all in the tank. Back home my mom is obsessed with fish so I knew some basic stuff and that buying all those fish at once without any preparation would be drastic....and of course, it was. Everyone's fish died. After their sudden "fish rush" ran out (it took about two weeks) I decided I'd step in. I did all the basic stuff like getting the correct filter, cycling the tank, testing the water, changing the water, etc.

Now I'm basically at the end of my fish knowledge. I've had a polypterus senegalus for about 5 weeks now and some other community fish that my friend talked me into getting. My bichir, Gary, has a very unique personality and is starting to get used to me when I feed him.

I need some more advice on what to do. I feed him sinking shrimp pellets and frozen beef heart and he'll eat as much as I put in the tank. I put 5 rosie reds in there once and he ate one per day. How often/much should I feed him?

Also (sorry to make this such a long post) I really love how unique Bichirs are and would like to add another sweet/unique tank mate, any suggestions? I like the "wow" factor Gary gets when people come over:grinno:

the minimum tank size for any bichir is a 55 gallon tank. sorry, but the 10 gallon just won't cut it. if you like snake-like fish, get some kuhli loaches, or some other fish like that.

once again, sorry about your luck, but your going to have to give the bichir back to the stare, or sell it to someone that can properly house it.

yeah I already got a 40 gallon that I haven't set up yet. He's only about 4'' long right now so I'm not in a big hurry. I'll make the upgrades as he grows. I didn't want to put all the investment into a fish that dies after 2 days ya know?

you lov that bichir, and their like lays potatoe chips; cant get just one :) check out the polypterus forum for advice on feeding and check out the pics to see which ones you like

Well let's see. It started out with a beta. Then there was a loach, a tiger barb, a goldfish, two odd cichlids, a puffer, a molly, and a catfish. All in the span of about 10 days:screwy:. Kinda sad really....Oh well, I decided not to get myself involved until the carnage was over, now the tank is running great and anytime I have problems I can just give my mom a call and she's great at the general fish/aquarium stuff but she doesn't know anything "bichir" specific

after transfering the bichir to the large home you should look into some dwarf puffers, great personalities in small packages, do well with small tetras too.
