Northern Pike Info??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't say I agreed about eating them just that people on here need to chill out. You can keep a pike in a 55 but obviously you will need a larger tank as it grows it's kind of common sense ;)

Know it all idiots is why I almost never come to this site, none of them have experience but will tell you every fact they can make up in there head at that time

First off a 4' pike is over 20 years old and only a female, I have a 24" pike I've had it a year and a half and its an extremely easy fish to keep its grown from 17-24" in a year and a half and being a male and in captivity it probably will never hit 36" which is small compared to some fish kept on here, it doesn't require loads of swimming space, will eat frozen smelt and has lived with a bunch of different fish, if he can't eat them then he has no reason to bother them and won't,

This is ignorant. Although i agree a lot of people keep fish that shouldnt be kept in aquariums a northern is right up on that list.

Doesnt need lots of space? you my friend shouldnt be on this site.

Dont worry he has tons of space, and im sure i know a whole lot more about northers than most people here so hes in good hands but keep at it and tell everyone a pike grows to 4' long and cant be kept in an aquarium cause you obviously know more than anyone with experience

Pike can be in an aquarium, the only problem is they eat a whole lot, I mean a whole lot. Any fish which eats a lot will grow a lot and do it pretty quickly. As for a heater, if your water temp stays between 60-70 without rapid temp fluctuations I wouldnt worry about the heater. As for keeping them with tropical fish, yes you can, as long as they are 10x too big for the Pike to eat. If they are any smaller than twice the size of the Pike and you dont keep the Pike full, you will find dead fish in your aquarium because the Pike will try to eat them. They really dont care too much about size when they are hungry, if it moves they will try to eat it when hungry. A 4" Pike will need about 3 minnows per day at a minimum, and the number goes up every few days. I rescued one from a bad situation and at 6" it can eat 6-8 minnows without blinking.

I agree that a pike shouldn't be in a 55, a 180 will do for a couple years though, in the first year males get to 12-14" and females hit 16-20" and then a few inches per year, any temp under 80 is ok but 60-70 is best
As for food any predator should have a break between eating but mine eats 6-10 smelt a week and does fine, I drop in a few large pond comets once in a while for a change but that's about all he eats

1st of all I never said pike get 4ft long (even though they do and can get up to 59 inches) I said 36 inches which is 3ft and most common, 2nd the OP didn't say whether they were getting a male or female and 3rd I believe you should at least own a tank or pond big enough for a fully grown fish your gonna keep before you get it (u never know what the future will bring) 4th where are you getting your info that Pike only grow a couple of inches a year, how big is your tank, and what are his tankmates? 5th Are you sure your feeding your Pike enough food? I would like to see pics.
