nose issue on gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
he is refering to colors and head i believe. they do have slender snouts and dark coloration. the coloration is prob because of substrate but the snout, is odd. looks more like what spotteds get i believe. floridas tend(not always) to be shorter and thicker

Thanks! The coloration is similar to mine. Maybe there is a difference on snout length. I'll have to compare.

***I just finished checking and comparing my Florida's snout to those of the 2 fish in the poster's pics. You're correct. My Florida has a shorter, thicker snout.***

actually there is something to worry about with nose damage as it can lead to infection. i wouldn't worry about treatment other than maintaining good water quality. if you notice a lot more discoloration you may eventually want to add some salt and bump up the temp.
the best thing you can do, as previously mentioned is get them into that bigger tank. the tank they are in currently is one of the main culprits in this snout damage as they don't have enough room to turn around well. i would get them in sooner than later as long as the new tank is ready.
another thing you can do is provide some overhead cover in the form of artificial or live plants. reduced lighting will help calm the fish down, and make sure there aren't other fishes aggravating the fish either.
those are unusual looking gars, were they store-bought or wild-caught? good luck--

my mistake about the nose damage. as said by solomon, add some cover, bump them into the bigger tank(what are the tankmates?) and keep the water pristine, they should heal up no problem.

on another note, they look like spotted gars rather than floridas, what you guys think? snout's long and slender compared to the standard florida. or just individual variation?

HEY i just brought that up!!

:P must've missed that. where did the previous owner get the gars frm do you know?

My gator gar had the same issue. Also laying near the bottom all the time. I talked to a few people that said water flow. So I tried a super powerful power head and now shes clam and patroling near the top. Just a thought. Nice gar by the way!!!

shouldnt use super-powerful water pumps they d best in slow moving waters...a super powerful powerhead is just forcing them to swim. not the best idea...

I have had the same problem in the past sometimes they spook and run into the glass...and usually if I notice it I will throw in a product called Melafix...works great on healing up the opens sores on the fish...i had irredescent sharks for awhile and man did those things hit the glass hard...i had to treat them every week...but i would say if it gets bad just throw some of that in and literally you will see improvements ina a day or soo.
