Not a pet, sloth

This little guy appeared in one our friend aluminum can bin the other day.


It was carefully moved to a mango tree nearby, and since disappeared into the forest.

Beautiful animal. Hopefully it will be released back into a (hopefully) safe place, perhaps its original patch of trees.

It disappeared back into the forest once put into the mango tree, the island where I live is mostly dense forest and uninhabitable.

Only the small sliver of land on the bay and beach is built into a town it takes 5 minutes to walk end to end.

Most of the forest is impassable.

The sloth is the largest mammal I've seen, the only are others are smaller, a tiny marsupial the locals call neques, and agoutis.

The only other substantial size animals are reptiles.

And of course the tourists.

There are about 500 permanent residents (mostly from families that go back over 100 years) and then a smattering of X-pats.
Dutch, French, Chinese, S Americans and about 10 N Americans.
The population swells to about 1000 during holidays, and with tourists.
Few Vehicles maybe a dozen , mostly Kawasaki type mules, one or 2 pickup trucks for delivering cargo.
To get tanks or anything else here, it has to be delivered by pangas across 10 miles of Pacific

Great pictures. I enjoyed seeing the sloth hanging on a branch between a citrus leaf and a hibiscus flower. But I'm glad not to have a sloth in my kitchen.
One of my "other pets" is this double red hibiscus grown from a cutting in the 80's.
