Not another 'Guess what's in the bag?' thread.... lol

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sp. Dabola is just undescribed species of bichir caught in Dabola. Endli Dabola should be called Endli "tinkisso river" to be less confusing...

I like that idea. All of us who own these "Dabola endli" pretty much know we are talking the same fish if we call them Tinkisso river endli.

Dr.B Dr.B this dabola and sp.dabola being the same fish, is it also reffering to endlicheri dabola(tinkisso river)?

yes, yes, and yes. What I'm saying is that there is no fish (to my knowledge) that is just labeled as Polyptetus Dabola. So when you see a fish labeled Dabola it's an sp. Dabola. It's just missing the sp. similar to the way we leave the sp. out on sp. Koliba and often just say Koliba.
Hahaha ok yeah i agree didnt understand what was being said

I would consider that last one a faranah Lap. The other photos I'll say are sp. Dabola
Here are 2 monster sp. Dabola. One of em resembles the old sp. Dabola I have. And the other resembles the bichir I got recently(except mine is from Faranah, rather than Dabola).

I know bud just didnt understand what the doc was sayimg

No that's not referring to that. I think the thing that is messing people up is that Polypterus endlicheri sp. Dabola (tinkisso river) is an endlicheri. It supposedly has no relation to the fish we are talking about other than it's caught in the same place

Sp just means species...
So sp. Dabola just means an undiscribed poly caught near dabola.

Endlicheri (described) faranah/dabola/volta are endlis caugjt in those regions

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 theres also spp (plural for sp/species) and cf. Which is something to do with the latin names and the fish needing more confering lol or something like that

exactly, but the sp. is also on the endlicheri sp. faranah, endlicheri sp. Dabola, etc.., because as hobbyists we think there might be differences that could possibly differentiate the catch locations.

Another monster sp.Dabola. I can't wait to see more sp. Nigeria to show up. Definitely going to bring up more confusion. :D

I dont know i kind of thinkthats something mostly the poly keepers do. Endlicheri sp.dabola is the same as endlicheri dabola the sp really isnt needed if we are saying that its and endlicher dabola... does that make sense lol sound better in my head.

Astronatus ocellatus "bahia" is just an oscar caught in bahia. It wouldnt make sense to call it astronatus ocellatus sp. Bahia

Isnt it the same with koloton and koliba.
Sp. Koloton/koliba because it never was established as to what it is ? Lap variant or different species
