Sorry, but I gotta do it.:)

Aquarium gravel is what I really want. But at $14.00 a 25lb bag around here, it would net me around $150.00 to fill my 300g.:irked:

So,I have been all over Nashville looking for some good sand to put in my new tank.
And unfortunatly, most places are out of pool filter sand because of the winter season.

I have seen many post's of the Play sands, Construction sands and the All/Multi Purpose sands. I was leaning towards the larger grain sands for construction as I will be using some HOB filters and I will need heavy grains to keep from floating around.

So after many miles and a lot of stops, here is what I have found from the smallest of grain to the largest.

First picture is of some playsand from the local Hardware store and Home Depot/Lowes. It is a fine grade sand, almost like sugar. All the stores have different bags, but all the inside sand is the same.

The second is some Quikrete Pool filter sand that I scored today at a Local Pool place.
It is a much more coarse sand. Plus, I like the darker color.

Just thought I would post some pics and see what you would recommend or favor as a good all around sand for my tank between these two.
The playsand is plentiful around here, but the Poolfilter sand I scored today is few. He has 6 bags which will give me 300lbs.
Not even sure if that will be enough.

Just as a side note... The play sand is very clean. The Quikrete Pool sand in dirty. Very dirty. And all 6 bags of the Quikrete have been wet. Not sure if that will matter.

Here are the pics and thanks for helping.

Go with the pool filter sand. The playsand is very light in weight and will kill your HOBs. I doubt the playsand is clean. It may look like it, but you will have to rinse either sand very well.

You aren't sure if 300 pounds will be enough? What size tank?

300 Gallon. 8x2x2.5

It depends on the look you want. 300 pounds will definitely be enough. I don't like the look of real deep sand, and I think I have about 85 pounds in my 125.

300 lbs should be plenty. I used less than 50 in both my 75s.

yeah id go with the PFS looks a lot nicer. i might get me some this weekend...after i check out what my LFS has. :D

that playsand is completely different from any I've ever seen. It ultimately depends on where you live and where you buy it. My playsand is a good mid ground between the two different sands you show here as far as coarseness and even color goes. Definitely interesting.
