i know this doesn't belong here but i know the stingray people are usually the most well versed/knowledgeable on this site... anyways...

someone asked me to diagnose their betta. any idead what this black could be on its dorsal. my 2 best guesses are 1) its normal coloration or 2) its bruising.

please let me know what you guys/gals come up with.

thanks.

99% sure thats natural coloration with maturity. I've had a few red males that have developed that dark brown/black coloration and each fish lived a good 3-5yrs.

speaking of bettas... why do they sell bettas in those little plastic containers at the store? sealed! My friend has one in a regular bowl... no oxygenation.. nothing.... am i missing something since im not knowledgeable in bettas???

They usually aren't sealed, but rather have a hole in the middle of the lid.
Bettas have a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air. The practice of holding them in those tiny cups at pet stores is still disgusting though. They should display them in a divided tank with proper filtration and heating, then put them in bags or containers for transport.

People buy them because they think it doesn't take much to care for them.
Petstores perpetuate this idea by displaying them in tiny cups. It's unfortunate.
It doesn't take much to care for them, but it takes more than throwing them in a tiny cup.

Honestly, I'd be fine with the whole thing if they kept them in the pet stores properly, and they sold heated bowls and recommended live plants.

thanks for derailing the thread guys but the original question never has been answered. whats wrong with the betta pictured above?

Pretty sure I gave you one, which no one else has piped up otherwise.

Probably didn't encourage the betta "pros" to be inclined to comment. In a round about way i think you likely offended the very people who's help your looking for.

btw if your gonna heat a betta tank to any extreme temp difference then the rooms temperature. hope it doesn't tuse that labiryinth organ. keeping them in tiny cups isn't the best for them obviousely but research the fishs native habitat. It's also not a cruelity imo. the cruelity is the water quality, and starvation i see.
