I have been running my filters 4 to 5.months now and my ammonia levels are still not 0. It is a 0.50. What could be causing this.. I am running biomatrix in 2 hw304b filter on a 125 gallon tank. With 2 fish. Only thing I can think about it my plant leaves are falling apart, Maybe that is causing decaying and causing levels to rise. Any help still kinda new to this thank you

What are your other parameters?
The tank may be cycled adequately for two fish but if there's now a new source of ammonia, such as the plants dying, the load may be too much for the bb to convert and it will take a little time to catch up.

Everything else is fine. My sponge filter I have in my tank were very dirty could that have caused it. I have to make a cleaning schedule. For my filters and tank. So I keep up on it. How often do you clean out your filters and what not.?

Perhaps the ammonia test you have now is "off". Maybe try another ammonia test.

take it you are using an API master fresh water test kit, what do nitrates read, keep in mind test bottle #2 needs be shaken hard atleast 30 seconds, better a minute. when taking ammonia test, drop the vile on the carpet, if it looks yellow its 0, do you use Seachem Prime to condition the water at water changes? dosing for size of tank, not the amount of water replacing. when you clean the filters are you using old tank water to rinse the media out? never tap water.

sorry that is wrong. prime binds to the cloramides (SP) but does not cause a false reading., I asked because the chart never jives with the test. you drop on a carpet and look from a distance you get better color reading. if there is any yellow, ammonia good.

I am more interested in what the nitrate level reads. no nitrates no cycle.
