If it doesn't have a sunken stomach, there's a good chance that it's eating while you're away. It'll eventually get comfortable and start eating in front of you, if there's nothing wrong with it.

today he's been laying on the bottom of the tank. swims every now and then and i noticed him spit a bloodworm out.
clown knifes are nocternal fish, meaning they come out at night, so i recommend you to feed him at night and check him the next day if he has a small little bolge behind his head. if he doesn't seem to eat, just retrun him back
