Have to disagree with you there bro. There are several reasons why I do so.

First: Not everyone here is wanting to keep a community tank. We are MONSTER Fish Keepers, not Community Fish Keepers. Cichlids are MONSTER!!!

Second: There are SO many different, diverse kinds of cichlids it would take you a REALLY long time to list them all. New ones are constantly being found/described. So there is nothing wrong with telling someone to get a cichlid.

Third: SINCE there are so many different kinds of cichlids, there are tons of options FOR a community tank. I DO believe that cichlids can and have been kept successfully in a community tank. Just because someone says 'Get a Cichlid' doesn't mean they have to get a bruiser. There are many cichlids out there that make AWESOME community fish.

Fourth: There are so many different types of 'community' tanks out there, its wrong to just stereotype them into peaceful setups. A CA cichlid community tank is just as attractive as a SA tetra tank.

Fifth: Telling someone to get a cichlid doesn't mean they have to get one. It just pushes them in a general direction that they can choose to follow if they so wish. Thats where more experienced members need to step in and give recommendations for certain set ups.

Sixth: GET A CICHLID!!!

First: I have seen people looking for a nice community tank, and then them being suggested "cichlids".

Second: Not everybody knows as much as normal MFKers about cichlids. If someone says "get cichlids", then they might end up with an oscar instead of, say, an angel.

Third: Like I said before, most n00bs don't know the difference between an oscar (cichlid) and an angel (cichlid). I'm just saying to be more specific with our suggestions.

Fourth: Again, I said that cichlids are beautiful, and I am not bashing them at all.

Fifth: I agree. More experienced members could be more specific. Instead of "get cichlids", we could say "A nice CA community would look nice. Some good species would be...." etc.

Sixth: Too late :D

That's just my input. I was just annoyed at how everybody seems to suggest cichlids as a first choice, even if they have, say, danios already.

I understand I suppose. I haven't really ever heard any one say though just 'Get a cichlid'. Most of the time we give suggestions for what type of cichlid, reasons for it, and the like. I think its better to say 'Check out the Cichlid forums' because then they get to browse around and get a DESIRE to get a cichlid on their own. Then you can point them in the right direction.

Japes...lol...I don't need to!! You're doing it just fine for me!! :D

I think it would be most wise if they didn't start a thread about that. Not everyone NEEDS to get a Crenicichla, but they SHOULD get some. I shall refrain from that speech though this time...lol...

good point

maybe it should be simple enough as " cichlids are great fish. do some research and see if you like them."?
besides, most noob fish keepers i see already have the fish and come wanting help...

groove, where is this hunting thread? I'm gonna go give you a piece of mind! ;)
