Well ive had bad experiences with cichla in the past and haven't been able to get them to feed. I now have a 12" Mono who has a good body weight and ive had him for a day nearly two, and ive tried with floating pellets, sinking pellets, mussle, prawn and squid and he hasn't eaten anything. Hes tail is also a little white and fraid around the edge the same as my new big geophagus brasiliensis (Different tank) ive added a little salt does he need time? (He wasn't fed on feeders initially)

So what was he eating? It has happened with me often even if they are eating non-live, a move can throw them off. At 12" he should be able to go a while without eating, but I would try to get some live in him if you think he's not doing well.

Fin rot I guess? Stress from the move? Just try to keep the water as clean as possible. Big water changes frequently. Don't medicate unless it gets really bad.

I know i forgot to ask what he was feeding on and the sotre is shut for new year ill phone and ask tommorrow.

Bruce dont worry if he doesn't eat for a few days he will soon come round. Make sure the temperature is fairly high and try a couple of whitebait which works every time with me. Instead of using feeders get hold of some of the river feeder shrim; they cannot resist them.

What about a little melafix to sort out his fins although if he is healthy he should repair himself

Thanks i think the fin damage is just from the move as my big brasiliensis has some, i don't have any melafix but ive tried a does of salt. Ill keep you updated.

lol weird... my quick 2 cents.. test nitrates and your ammonia just to be on the safe side since you dont seem to have luck with cichla as i have been reading.. (white stuff on fins) dont take this the wrong way but most of the time its the hobbiest and not the fish that is the problem ;) as for feeding you can not expect to bring him home and hes going to take pellets and cut foods all over again.. yes he ate them once but he is now in a new enviorment. he may eventually feed on them again in the future but you are prob going to have to feed him some live food just to get him use to his new surounding and up to the top of the tank and smashing anything that hits the water again. i have had cichla not eat for a few days.. i dont like to push it past 2 with new fish (mainly small cichla) because of stress on top of lack of nutirients and energy from no food. if theres one thing i learned from keeping peacock bass over the years is that they are stubborn. also im not sure if cichla like salt.. i been reading that soft water fish do not like any salt... maybe someone can back me up on this one...i hope my info helps
Boost

p.s. i dont know about stuck in his mouth but he might have thrown up.. i have had fish do this in the past... do water changes if this is the case

HHmmm thats contradictory....

Especially with feeders falling out of his mouth.....

Patience and training go hand in hand with these beauts :)
