when i bought the fish lfs told me it was a jd but does not have the dark color like the rest of them if it is a jd can some one tell me what kind he /she is u cant realy tell in the pic but has a red stripe in the top of his fins pic is not the best quality thanks
looks like you have a stressed out male JD. His color will come back when he adjusts to his environment. a dark background and substrate would help also.
well ive had him for a few month now and when i got him from the store he look just like that with alil bit les color has new marking another ? is his face gets redish is that norm
100 percent male jack dempsey. hes not stressed out he doesnt look like it but if I am not mistaken hes still little isn't he that's what mine looked like before take a look at him now. have fun with him they are very interactive fish. I got mine january 2010 now hes pushing 7 inches

yes a redish shape is normal as you will soon find out JD are very good at voicing their mood thru their colors. when mines relaxed he assumes a very light shade when he was little hed turn a bit red when they get angry they turn very dark and they get strippes. the stripped mean they are ready to fight when cichlids fight they tend to get stripes. the looser looses his stripes thats why they are used to preform tests about fishes cognitive abilities cichlids can infer that if A>B and B>C then A>C they are fascinating. the dempsies as well as other cichlids can also recognize their owners faces and mine somtimes gets angry at new people he doesnt like one of my friends he hides every time he comes and my fish never hides. mine also doesnt like it when I wear red he takes it as agression and gets mad at me I hope you have fun with him. I just had to share that
