limas can get 2 feet or bigger so don't think it can't out grow your tank but one would last a long time in that tank and it sounds like they would be the right cat for you but there are others lots of species of pims pictus arn't that hard to keep alive it must of been something else mine love it when i do water changes they allways try to swim in the current made by the water comeing in

Personally before investing in more cats (in my area Lima's are 3 to 4 times more per fish cost wise), I would check out what is going wrong in your tank before getting more. Pictus are to the best of my knowledge considered to be pretty hardy. Just an idea I wouldnt want you to waste some good cash to see some fish die again if there is something wrong that can be fixed to prevent it.
Yeah, If you got a silver-tip, it would have to be brackish. I would definitely recommend the lima shovelnose.
were you useing any meds on the tank did you check the params i've had pictus die on me like that but i think it was cause the water temp was off when i changed the water plus i use to add alot of salt but i also treated some fish for ich when i had anouther group of pictus i forgot to use a half does and they were all breathing heavy i did a water change as fast as i could be i ended up loseing 3 out of 5 so meds + catfish = bad

Definitely need to have the water close to the same temp as the tank when doing water changes. I've been doing it long enough that when I use my python I can feel for the temp being the same and never have any problems. Also you will want to test your tap water for chlorine, metals, nitrates, and ammonia. Sounds strange that they die like that, but you send them into shock when the temps vary. If you can't feel out the temps you should definitely get a container dedicated to water changes. Let the temp of the water come to at least room temp or if you have an extra heater heat the water to the exact temp of the tank before doing a water change. Also how long was your tank set up before you added fish and what is your water changing schedule like?
