I dunno Sunpoe, they are pretty easy to make and need less maintainence than a canister.

W/D's only seem complicated, actually they are very simple and easy to maintain.
The only major consideration with a W/D sump is getting a adequate return pump, and having a back-up pump.

The initial monetary out lay can be disconcerting too.

I agree with you about everything but the money issue. If you DIY with pot scrubbies, an old tank, some silicone caulk, egg crate, and PVC it's pretty cheap.

If you're dead set on Eheim & the only 2 choices are 2217 or 2026 then I vote 2217 for the extra filtration. If you're kinda on the fence still, I suggest a combo of Rena XP3 & A/C 110. JMHO "T"
