The human race is so infinitely diverse. People will continue to squirm and quarrel over animals used for alcohol not realizing that there are still places on earth where peoples societies are based on cannibalism or otherwise. Nothing surprises me anymore, it only gives thirst for my interest in the evolution of cultures and their traditions and beliefs.

How ignorant are you to bring costs of these animals into the equation? What is their worth to you? Maybe $2 K a peice and a combined $50 for whatever else is in there. These are prices dictated by your people, for these animals in your country. The person who put this potion together puts no high pricetag on these animals. They are no more than the rabbits, rats or racoons that invade your suburban homes.

Oriental countries hold tight their traditional methods, and have lived and died by them for many many centuries since modern medicine has been in practice. Yet many of these cultures still contain populations which far outlive that of North Americans. We pump pill after pill of unnatural toxic drugs into our body here, and then we persecute and shame far away cultures for utilizing something that the earth has provided for them to use. Many of their traditional remidies are effective, many are not. The same can be said for modern drugs and medicine.
So you are saying that turturing and then eating dogs and cats is a correct thing to do?

I don't think it is a blue-tree monitor... The thing is that alcohol tends to distort the specimen. Even a preserved specimen from 100 years ago isn't so hot to make comparative on (ie. the type specimen described for the first preserved mantella is not found anywhere in Madagascar.)

It is their culture... not much you can do about it.

why is everyone so upset?

we eat cows. how do you think India feels about that?

anyway. i kinda agree with will hayward, not that torturing cats and dogs is "right", but in other places different to us, it's normal. lots of times people see stuff like this and they assume the "asians" or whoever are doing it with complete knowledge and similar beliefs as us. they dont, and don't see anything wrong with it. so we lament the loss of the few animals we see that are "wasted", but i think it's very unfair to blame/flame/insult the other culture.

No need to rationalize it...western culture will ALWAYS be disgusted with this type of thing. ESPECIALLY when it includes what we consider inhumane (how about cruel and unusual?) treatment.

One thing i will argue about till it has been beaten dead is these eastern culture's love of consuming the RARE AND ENDANGERED. I respect culture differences, but the natural world isn't yours to destroy for your superstitions and beliefs.

Care about things like this? Look into causes like WildAId, Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd etc....
