Hi, I am new to the forum. I have a deep passion for fish since I was a little boy. My uncle had an Aro tank and I was hooked. I mainly had an oscar tank and now I have a knife/aro tank. My question is what is it about a flowerhorns kok that makes it so desirable? I mean in my opinion, it looks like a mutation/alien looking like feature. Don't get me wrong, I love the colors and patterns they have but the kok is just alittle hard to look at. I know most of you love having the kok bigger. So please tell me your opinion.

I actually like the flowerhorn/parrot hybrid because it has the color and does't have the kok. I am currently waiting for my LFS to get me one.

BTW this was posted for a discussion not to trash talk or anything. I don't know if this has been already discussed.

In Asia it's considered to be a sign of verility or wealth or something like that. Personally, I don't buy into any of that crap. Buy a fish that you like for reasons other than a magic dragon will appear and grant your wishes of 40 virgins and a pot o gold.

it's more of a personal preference then anything. there are flowerhorn types that are known to not grow a full kok. these are known as classic breeds. however the trend the community is leaning more towards this day is the breeds with the bigger kok. i personally would love to own 1 kokster, but i prefer the kok to be more proportionate to the fish.

Thats why my female is great. All the amazing colors and only a small kok, which is fine with me because it is one great looking and acting fish. All about where you are and what you like I guess.

i would love to own a kokster too but too much is kinda bleh, some people have different tastes, i'm with you on the proportionate thing, i like something that is colorful and has a nice size head =/

It's rare to see a fish with explosive head. Also it looks powerful. Not all fishes have it. Like 2 head snakes and turtles. They look scary & freakish to some ppl but they are very rare and cost a lot of money. PPL who are deep into the hobbies like to collect rare specimens like such.

Plus a big head is the main trait of a fh to separate and make them different from normal fishes.

Yes. Proportion would be a show piece. Out of proportion koksters are only good for head gene breeding imo.

its an acquired taste... when i first got into fish keeping, the Kok was not my cup of tea; i actually hated it. NOW, i just love it!

its like the hair on a full grown male lion, or big antlers on a moose, it completes and makes them look powerful and dominant.

Wow I see, okay. I just recently got 2 GT and one has his bump growing in. I like it to a point. Like the one guy said, proportional. I can see how exotic it makes the fish look. But Ive seen some that were so big it looked like it was going to pop.

BTW what is inside the kok? Fluid? flesh?
