My brother in law would have an allergic reaction when he eats shrimps with tripolyphosphate. His lips would be swollen and he would have a very hard time breathing.

I have been feeding my fish with frozen shrimps for a few years now. If you look at the shrimps closely, you can tell if the shrimps contain the chemical or not. Shrimps with the added chemical will look whiter and shinny then the regular shrimps. It also looks more clearer then opaque when you look at the meat. When cooked, the meat is more crunchy then chewy.
The difference is obvious as a chef. Consumers are used to shrimp that are opaque and taste like iodine! Since humans can have reactions the chemical in small doses I seriously doubt there would be no consequences for fish who ingest huge amounts. My guess is foilks buy the cheapest shrimp out there. Its gotta hurt!

Wow, thanks. Good to know.

No problem. i am a nutritionalist for people not fish. I would love to see a study of tri-poly and sulfite on live fish!

Oh boy...going to check the bag now.

Yup...what do you know. Farm raised, uncooked shrimp. Salt and the triphosphates.

I wonder what this means...Ill keep feeding it for now, but the next bag I will look for one that doesnt have it.

im not worried about it, been feeding shrimp for 4 years with the "bad" stuff in it. i will continue to use the same shrimp.

im not jumping on the ONOZ bandwagon for absolutely no legit reson so far.

^thank god someone with some sanity.

Been feeding it for quite awhile with no prob so has many many people on here and in the hobby in general. post some studys and some real info. this thread reaks(sp) of fear mongering

no offence to the OP, but got any studys? anything?

I don't know about the others, but I feed my fish the shrimp and I also eat a lot of it myself. I just like the taste of the shrimp without the additive.

I keep saying I have no proof of harm in fish.....however to say that powerful unregulated preservatives are harmless is naive. Given a choice I would think we who spend thousands on fish and enclosures can spend a few more cents on high quailty feed. For all i know the preservatives make fish live longer, reproduce more vigorously, have better colors, lead longer lives and increase intelligence.....but I doubt it. The stuff is designed to force the retention on fluids.
