Last night as I posted in another thread that i got the Rays all tucked in to the pond and at 4 oclock in the morn i gor up to empty my self and went over to check in on them and the smaller of the rays was stuck to the suction 90 that goes to the pump i tried to push her down gently but I had to shut the pump down so it would release. I thought she would be dead in a couple of hours as she wasnt breathing to well. She was stuck right to her head over one of her eyes and one of the ports on the same size and I thought it sucked that eye out but today I can see its still there but she has a vacum circle 1 1/4" on her head and to make things worse they are both loosing their slime coat, like peeling off if you know what i mean. My amonia was .50 for some reason as its an established pond for 8-9 months and has been empty for 2 months (maybe the problem) so i did a 60% water change just now. The hurt one has a appetite still but the big male has no interest in food. Anyone have some real help???

The loss of slime coat is associated directly to stress. What's the lighting like? Water temps? Water parameters? And add a large filter to the intake, to help them avoid getting sucked into it.

Yea i see that about the slime coat, after the water change and adding some prime the amonia went back to 0 and the temp is where the Cali's like it- 68, nitrate is 15, ph 8.2 . I just came home and they seem to be breathing a little slower than earlier. Do you think the amonia spike happened because I dont have any live sand and therefore not enough benificial bacteria?

Could be. Maybe slap a T on the end of the suction line so if one gets close, it doesn't block the pipe and get sucked in. Those rays are pretty hardy once they are in a system. I'd bet she'll be fine in the long run.

Just checked my amonia and its back up to .50 since last night so I treated with prime again. Would it help if I took some of my filter media (polyester pad) out of my other sump and put it in this tanks sump? If I cant keep it (amonia) I just might put them into the big pond since they are not fresh out of the ocean and I dont see them itching or any worms on them.

Slime coat sloughing greatly increases ammonia (I found this out the same way).

so then should i put them in the big pond for better water quality or take some media out of the big and put it in the small or keep treating which i dont think i can keep up with that

If your pretty sure they are clean and healthy I would take the gamble and put them in. Thats just a guess cause I am not there to see what is going on.

If you move them over, give them a quick (2 - 3 min) freshwater dip. Match temp and pH.... keep a LOT of air going in the bucket. See how they do. Let them go as long as they look 'normal'. If they tweak out or stop moving, pull them. It's a good way to help knock off anything you might not want in your big pond.

As far as clean its hard to tell in a pond since there is no glass to look through to see if any worms are hanging on them but i dont see any. As far as healthy they sure are stressed but the amonia isnt helping matters at all. It was .25 when i came home from work today so i primed it again but it seems like a never ending battle now. No one has touched on the question i posted earlier about taking some filter pad and live rock from the other pond to get some benificial bacteria in the small pond, would this help at all?
