I think the title explains itself, trying to fix past mistakes now. Something some of you have probably heard way too many times, but it was like being a kid in a candy store all over again. So I'd appreciate any info, advice, direction and even a kick in the butt (as I do need it from time to time) on how to do this ... um ... more properly.
I have a 55 gallon tank in my livingroom, that I thought I knew what I was doing. As each day goes by I realize I know less and less. The sticky's are great and often times I feel like a bigger idiot. Plus a few friends have enjoyed my free fish for them, as they've gotten a number over the past 4 years.
So here is where I'm at with my 55. I thought I'd play it safe with 2 green terrors and 2 syno's. Although after some more reading I'm wondering if the GT's will allow the syno's to live once things have grown. So far I haven't seen any problems amongst them, but the GTs are still quite small probably. I'm thinking the GT's are of the same sex, but honestly I've no clue, and currently they are all in the tank. The syno's are a Synodontis Ocellifer (thanks again to a number of members who helped me identify it) who's about 5-6" long, and the other syno is a mixed hybrid featherfin (gift from a friend / although I might find out not such a gift) who's about 2 1/2" long.
As well I received a bunch of plants (I've a green thumb, this should be no problem .... NOT). Sticky's once again have been great but have left me with some confusion along the CO2 lines and such. (I did say I was an idiot anumber of times now). Watched a lace plant wither away to nothing, and was seeing the same begin with the rest of them. That's when I read the sticky's and said ... Duh oh ya ... light. The lace plant had only a plain flourescent, but thats a different tank and different issue ... one tank at a time.
So here's how my 55 sits today ...
1368403688978.jpg1368404249662.jpg
For filtration I'm using 2 AquaClear 70 .... I went this route for convenience sake. I thought about the AC110, but I have an AC70 on each of my 30 gallons. So this way I'm only having to buy 1 type of supply for maintenance purposes. Makes it simpler for my family and I'll probably change from a HOB far down the road, when I actually do know a few things.

I've got a Rena Air 300 for my air pump. Now this is one of my points of confusion. When to use the air pump as I've read that it causes the CO2 to escape from the tank, which according to what I've read the plants may or may not need. Or should I not use it all together .... as I don't have a CO2 dispenser, which I'll explain further down.

The heater is a Fluval E200 ... I think I'm safe here. Although not taking anything for granted. The tank is set at 78 fahreinheit currently.

Lights ... hmmm ... yep I now know I need those. The tank sits in our livingroom. Its a very well lit room, although no direct sunlight falls on the tank. But like I said the plants were withering away. So I picked up a T5 overhead light. After about 3 hrs, I started to notice a change in colour (vibrance) of some of the leaves. I'm thinking a good portion of them might be saveable still. But this is going off of my knowledge about non-aquatic plants.
Now back to the air pump, I'd read that many people turn on their Air Pump at lights out, and turn off the Air Pump at lights on. I believe most of these tanks had CO2 dispensers though, whereas I don't. But I've also read I don't need a CO2 dispenser in order to keep plants. (My head is spinning here).

CO2 - Now I tried to get a CO2 unit for my tank, to only discover anything my LFS carries maxes out at 40 Gallons, where my tank is a 55. I was advised to use a CO2 Booster (liquid - just because I'm an idiot ... doesn't mean I'm the only one ... and to me anything that says CO2 on it, has to be gasous or pressurized). So I now have some.
First question on this ... personal knowledge would be a plus in my mind, but anything helps. At what time of day should I add this, morning or night; and how does this apply to previous confusion on the Air Pump. I'm guessing (AND I TRULY MEAN GUESSING HERE) that I add the Booster at lights on and run the Air Pump at lights off.
Although I'm now wondering, if under this set-up I have ... (ie: no CO2 dispenser) that I should un-hook the Air Pump all together. Because the Plants oxygenate the water, but at lights out they start using oxygen as well. From what I've read ... (oh oh ... Head spinning again).

Now the final thing I now have for my tanks. I've read about this thing on here, too many times to count and I've looked at them in stores almost as much. I finally bought a Freshwater Master Test Kit. As I said in my title, the Idiot is done ... I'm ready to learn.

Here's a couple pics of the fish

It was so difficult to get a pic of my syno ocellifer before ... as I found out when I was trying to find an ID on him. He'd spent his entire life in a 30 gallon tank, I had the tank, with him and a few other fish given to me 4 yrs ago (My first tank). There was a pleco at least double his size in the tank as well ... That was the first fish I gave away. But now with the extra space, he's lost all his skittishness. Totally different fish, lets me watch him now; even with the lights on. Always hid before.

The mixed hybrid featherfin .... I like the white accents on his fins and such. But if I could only keep one syno .... this one would have to find a new home.
1368404080498.jpg
The 2 Green Terrors ... not the best pick, but I was trying to catch both at the same time. Been keeping an eye on them, I've read its hit or miss with them and plants, and the more hearty plants are better. But so far they seem to be leaving them alone.
The only thing else in the tank other than the gravel and driftwood, are 3 barbs, 2 mollies, and a tetra that I used when I first had the tank set-up. Been too lazy to try and scoop them out.

The tank is currently lid less, although we do have a lid for it if need be ... It evaporates around 4 gallons a week, I've been measuring. Which frankly I do kinda enjoy the moisture around the house. We live in the prairies .... DRY ....

Sorry for the long-winded post, but like the title said ... I'm ready to learn. All feedback is greatly appreciated. The good, the bad and the ugly .... Would just like to be finally going in the proper direction. Thank you all in advance ... really looking forward to all responses.

About the Master Test Kits ... forgot to ask. Do I need to keep a set schedule as to what time of the day I do my tests ... or could the hour of testing vary between test dates. I understand some need to be done every second day and such .. just want to know if I'm okay if one day I test at 3pm and the next test date I test a 8am

i love green terrors, one of my all time favorites. id be nervous about getting too into planting any tank with cichlids, i tried multiple kinds and you are heading towards the best way to do it by attaching it, but still a good chance the GT will redecorate on their own. have any better pics of the GTs? sex will be good to know for future reference as 2 males will likely fight and quarrel to get dominance and if its a male and female, catfish could be at risk if they breed. either way you are off to a good start and doing the right thing, there are some people with great knowlege

and on the liquid carbon, its probably flourish excel and can help with plant growth and reduce algea. add it in the morning around the time the lights come on but be careful to dilute it before just pouring because it will stun fish in high concentration if they end up to pass through a cloud of it. airpump isnt really necessary and definately not if you switch to pressurized co2. also keep in mind lfs co2 system shouldnt be rated for gallons, but it was likely using disposable cartriges and one thing i have gathered is to do pressurized co2 right the first time with a 5lb tank or bigger

So its probably safe just to unhook the airpump all-together then .... cool with that, one less cord to worry about. And all the CO2 systems they had available used disposable CO2 canisters ... it was the packaging themselves that said they maxed out at 40 gallons.

Thanks for the info on diluting the liquid carbon ... that I didn't know. Much appreciated .... makes sense (idiot moment).

Now for the liquid carbon itself .... Its not flourish, although a part bottle did come with the plants. What I have is called Api CO2 Booster: Plant: Liquid Carbon for Planted Aquariums. That's the label ... hindsight should've just taken a picture.

Got a couple more pics of the 2 Green Terrors.

have a feeling that they're both males ... but from the sounds of it .. should I want to keep my syno one of these guys will have to go.

I do not own a planted tank as I have cichlids that eat and shred them up. *runs away crying with arms flailing about*

But the beautiful mother of my child (she might be reading:D, creeper!) has a nice 55 gallon planted angelfish tank that I'm jealous of that I have learned off of.
She uses that same API booster. She has one of those co2 systems underrated hooked up with a nice diffuser. She leaves the co2 system on during the day and cuts it off at night time. There is no air pump either. She used a bag of aqaurium plant substrate mixed with some pool filter sand. She has a normal hoodlight with a plant bulb in it.
The before and after pics are rediculous. I'll post the pics here and I'll get the specifics of what she's using tomorrow if you'd like.

As for you being an idiot. Don't be so hard on yourself. I think the smartest people are the people that know how little they know as opposed to those who think they know it all because those who think they know it all don't know how much they don't. Does that make sense? Who cares.... I like your tank btw. Simple, straightforward, and peaceful.

Ok well she added a few plants on the right side but the ones on the left really grew in the past month and a half. I hate her. I've threatened to sneak my severum into it for a full day for an all you can eat buffet while she is at work.

P.s. There is three other angels in there but two are black and one is hiding.

Thanks koh .... yeah I'm curious about her set-up .... I like learning from real experience. The tank shots are nice, its definetely the direction my wife would like me to take with our tank.
As for being hard on myself ... I don't mind poking fun at myself. In the real world I'm Mr. Mom to 2 boys as well as a leader with Scouts Canada ..... that kind of stuff goes with the territory, and I'm always preaching to the kids to get the info and do it right in the beginning. My oldest boy called me a "Hippotwit" (I'm gonna shoot that damn Tweety Bird for teaching him that word). As I haven't practiced what I preach, when it came to these fishtanks.
Thanks for the compliments on the tank. I was trying to do my best on this one, as its now the focal point in our livingroom. I'd still like to add more driftwood, but only if I can find chunks that I can add to what I've got to make it higher.
Hoping what plants there are, survive. Just picked up the light yesterday, ran it for 8 hrs. yesterday. It looks like the plants are improving in my opinion, in fact I think I saw a new shoot on one of them when I turned off the light last night. But that could be wishful thinking on my part.
After sleeping on it. I'm starting to think of giving both GT's away, and picking something else for the tank to go with my syno's. Have a few other types of fish in my other 2 screw up tanks, to choose from.
I was thinking and please correct me if this is going down my idiot path once again. Remove both GTs, add a 3rd syno (another small hybrid featherfin, I had 2 given to me but this ones about 2"), a senegal bichir (4 1/2" long) and would I have room for anything else, to fill the upper half of the tank?
I've plans down the road for larger tanks in the basement. My 2 favs out of everything I have are my Lrg. Syno and Bichir.
Thanks again for all advice given and thanks in advance for all future advice. It all helps.

Well the GTs are going back to the fish store tomorrow .... tough suckers to catch without emptying the tanks decorations. I'm assuming its another sign the plants are coming back, came home to find them yanking the roots on the ones attached to the driftwood. And here I was concerned about them going after the ones that were planted in the substrate. (Go Figure ... I was told it would be hit or miss with them and plants .... but that was a curve-ball)
So now my tank sits with just the 2 synos pretty much. I was hoping for some more feedback ... and still hoping. I've no idea what to put in the tank now. All I know is that we want the Lrg. syno and plants to stay. So hoping for some suggestions as to want to include. Willing to start from scratch so to speak and could really use some direction, as well as a helping hand.

After browsing through countless peoples threads ... I found a link thats gonna finally put me in the right direction I believe. Aqadvisor.com ... really wish I had of known about this sight at some point in the past 4 yrs. Then again I never thought to ask either, someone who's planning a 75 mentioned it in his post ... and I'm so very thankful. Unfortunately I need to find homes for 8 fish total. As I've finally was able to plan the fish for the 55, the 3 synos and my senegal bichir. And those 8 fish rightfully belong in several 55 gallon tanks, and probably shouldn't have been sold to me when I only had 2 30's. (I now know)
Besides its probably safer to just play with plants for awhile, at least for the fishes sake. I might even look into the CO2 thing with one of my 30s. After these 8 fish go, 1 30 will be basically empty, while the other 30 will be full. By the way the 8 fish are 2 GT's, 2 Striped Rafael Catfish, 1 Vieja type cichlid, and 3 Dojo Loaches.
