The whole "glowing tissue" aspect actually began as a way to examine the path of stem cells. The stem cells of frogs were treated in different places with the "jellyfish" gene and as the frog's eyes developed the stem cells that became the eyes were located. Because the anatomy of most animals and humans is similar these stem cells were in the same location for people. This information has also benefited medical technology AND veterinary medicine. While this is the "commercial" side of the application, it might be tacky but represents a host of benefit. Note:these animals are not injected as they grow, but before they are born. And they cannot breed because then the supplyer would not have a monopoly on them.

I can believe that.
We have 'normal' orange feeders. And selective breeding obviously plays a part.
But I personally believe that again, fine line between naturally occuring mutations and selective breeding that causes the animal no discomfort, to genetically altered animals.

Most captive bred pets people have on this forum are selectively bred. Whether for quality, colour, or both. :)

Tell your Mum that she needs some fainting goats. A small farm few miles from here has baby fainters think called kits.

They would be a big hit with her friends . I will ship her 2.

I know in UK your laws are tougher than here when it comes to what is acceptable as far as animal 'modification" which I think is great but just in this particular mouse case it seems like it might be much of nothing.

I can see if they inject them ,etc but seems like glo fish they are bred like that .

Yes, glow fish are injected. I will admit when I was young (about ten years old) and ignorant I bought a glow fish. My dad then read something online that said they were injected with dye, and he told me he would never let me buy one again. Which was fine by me, I was quite shocked they could do that to fish back then.

Nowadays most fish shops in the UK have a sign up saying 'We do not support the act of dyed fish here - please don't ask'. I guess they had a lot of people asking for them.

I'm glad I live in the UK, as you say, laws seem to be abit stricter. But I still see more cruelty than I'd like!

Not sure what your getting at here Louie..my mum is quite ignorant herself when it comes to animals (hence why I care for them)..and whole reason my mum has a fish tank is because its therapeutic for her (she has a long term illness).

I'm sure you meant no harm, but it kinda comes across like your saying my mum supports cruelty to animals LOL.

On another note, don't know the story behind the goats, PM with the details?

Jessica, the true glo-fish aren't injected with dye. The proof is that when aquarists spawned them, the offspring came out with the same pink color to them.

I read an article about glo-fish being bred haphazardly in a home aquarium, and there were legal concerns due to copyrights

I agree that copy right thing is absurd esp since glo fish are now sold on aquabid

This is the part of genetically altered pets that bothers me. The greedy company that tries to achieve control through irrational legal action.

The one I bought had one strip of colour, it was bright but not glow in the dark (sorry for the confusion - my wording isn't all that great). These were injected, no?
