Nurse shark moved out, Guitarfish moved in (pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes. The shark we moved out for the show was a 6' female that was in there prior to these smaller nurse sharks going in (and out).
I wasn't impressed with how that was all edited together for the show. It wasn't really what happend when we moved the big girl out. It was very smooth and every detail was laid out prior to cameras rolling.

Here's a thread showing some of the big nurse move:

And another thread about one of the black tips now at home and healthy in the main shark display:

Did a LOT of filming, talking/naratives etc... and the end of it all, I was there as a person, but not really standing out. I'm happy about that.

Not sure I ever posted these, so I figured I'd post some pics of the main display as it sits now. It's getting to look a LOT better with a bigger fish population. Almost the whole display is native South FL. Only the BTRs and the pair of 5 ft morays (Tess and Leopard) are Pacific. I've got porkfish, mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, misc damsels (lots of sgt majors), french grunts, jacks, various angels, spiney lobster and a new black grouper round out the population.

Current sharks in this are the single nurse shark, 3 black tip reef sharks and brown banded bamboo. Every other shark has been moved to the 3,700 gallon 'reef'. The remaining nurse is still a big bully. The adult brown banded is the smallest shark I dare put in with it. They were the same length when the nurse was put in (about 3 1/2 ft), but the nurse is growing fast and has about 5 times the body size now as she is bulking up to that typical 'thick' nurse shark shape.

hmm... i guess i was right-- somehow i felt like the show made it more dramatic than what it really was. your display looks beautiful, i'm a fan of the show-- except for francis... he's kinda annoying.

i've been to the theater of the sea plenty of times... every time i go to the keys i go there! lol ... awesome place... sure they will take great care of him!

Update on this thread. The nurse shark pup we moved to Theater of the Sea (on Islamorada in the Keys) April of last year is now part of the new shark interaction program they set up in order to give people a first hand experience with a 'real' shark. The educational value of programs like these is unmatched compared to what people take away from watching them on TV, the internet or from behind a window. I happy this one time illegally collected animal has gone from a crammed tank where she touched both ends, to a public display and nursed back to health (no pun intended), to a very large open natural lagoon exhibit where she is playing a role in shark education.
