Nurse Shark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right now I have the Nurse Shark which is almost two years old she's only about 17 to 18 inch, I have two Bamboo's that are only 7 inch to 8 inch, and the two Coral Cats that is almost 10 inch. Yes the tank is getting overcrowded. But like I said before working on there new home of 700 gal. I have another shark as well in my 150 gal thats a 10inch Leopard with some of my nurse sharks old tank mates. And I'd like to get it all down to one tank, however i have read temp diff. between the Nurse and the Leopard so I not sure how its all going to work out.

7000g for shark that become 10 foot? what would the size be of this?
will this be enough for ya 4 other sharks also what oher sharks do u have?

am myself looking for some catsharks and bamboos that don't get bigger then a metre so can have a few in a 5 metra dia pool
but gonna get a growout tank of 8x3.5ft2ft soon i hope lol got the time
When I started to design and make the plain for what I have estimated in gallons was just for the Nurse shark. What I have read in the past is that the Nurse need at least 5000gal to do well in. Now i do agree that 7000gal is not going to be enought for the other 4 sharks however those sharks are going to other homes. I hatched the two bamboo. The coral cats were given to me by a friend who just couldn't take care of them after buy them.

Well - 8'x3.5'x2' is a 420 gallon tank, not 300 gallons.

Btw - keeping 2 Bamboos, & 2 Coral Cats requires a smaller tank than a full grown Nurse needs. You could keep a pair of Bamboos and a pair of Coral Cats in a 1,800-2,000 gallon tank.

What I have read in the past is that the Nurse need at least 5000gal to do well in.

If it was the source that I believe it is ("Aquarium Sharks & Rays" by Scott Michael) -then it is very inaccurate. Most his minimum tank sizes that is listed in that book should be increased by at least 4 times his figures. So for an adult Nurse - that would be about at least 20,000 gallons(not 5,000 or even 7,000 gallons).

How did you manage that - since Leopards under 36" are consider to be illegal in California & the United States. And yes - there's a big temperature difference between what the Nurse requires & what the Leopard requires. Nurses are a tropical species - prefer water temps of 70-85F. Leopards are a cool temperate species that prefers water temps of 56-71F.

i gues u keeping the nurse and leopard depending if u can with the temp or just 1 of them 2 and maybe the bamboo and catshark with it?
must be nice to get those sharks even for free living in a sharkfested country myself but getting 1 is a ***** let stand getting them for free

if u read that from that shark and stingray of that dude he is wrong yeah had my doubts but when i read a eppie only need a tank of 950 litres what is a 8x2x2 and they get 107cm in a 60cm wide and the lfs said my 6x2x2 is plenty for that shark laughed inside bought some coral and took off and left the shark with them got there the other day it did got sold tho i wonder who got it

YEAH this book i ment was reading a bit at the lfs about eppies cause they have 1 there it said the eppie only need 950 litre

what is the best way to calculate the width of ya tank or pool??????
is this 5 times the lenght of ya shark?
exsample eppie 107cm? does it got to be 5 metre in dia?
like the 5 mete dia pool could u only get 1 shark for this size pool?
or a pair cause it is around 2000 gallons?

I forget where I read that a Nurse needs 5000gal at. As far as how I recieved the leopard I had a friend who caught the shark from the wild. He thought he could raise the shark. After the shark ate half his tank he was going to kill it. I took it from him so he wouldn't kill it. I was going to let it go but talk to a friend who is a oceanographer who told me now that it has been in a home aquarium not to let it go that the shark would die.

ouch so ya mate got allot of $$$$ eaten ofcourse? reeftank?
yeah that is good taking it before he killed it
but if that is true they will die if they get set free????
then it would be a killing if they release the white shark they are keeping now in usa in a million gallon tank
don't think this is true that they die depending where u put them back maybe?

Well it's generally considered to be illegal to release a shark(or any fish) back into the wild(once it been in captivity) - unless you have a special premit to do so. Public Aquariums can get those premits.

As for a Nurse shark needing at least a 5,000 gallon tank/pool - there are several sources (websites) that quote Scott Michael's "Aquarium Sharks & Rays as though it were the Bible of keeping Sharks. Well - IT'S NOT. It's very inaccurate(and down right cruel) in terms of minimum tank sizes. Based on his suggest measurements for the tank - your talking about keeping a 8-10ft Nurse in a tank/pool with a foot print of about 165-190 sq.ft.

Check the Nurse shark videos on YouTube sometime - there's a few that are at Public Aquariums in Florida that will help you realize that a single Adult nurse needs a tank/pool with a footprint about 3.5- 4 times (650-700+sq.ft)what Scott Michael suggests.

yeah makes sense illigal lol but they won't die off it
someone could of the fines they will give u
is there a book like his that is correct?
or better of gettin info from internet?
and keep the 4/5 time bigger rule?

Actually going with a 4 to 5 times Scott Michael's figures is a decent starting place for most of the species listed in his book. But there are other books out there - that do a better job in figuring tank sizes for sharks - such a "the Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert Fenner. Which list the minimum measurements for any home aquarium benthic shark tank is 4 x 2. That is the Tank length is at least 4x the shark's length, and the tank width is at least 2x the shark's length.
