NYC China Town

They should be alright since they've grown accustomed to living in crappy conditions. Look at it this way: if they live, you have new fish that you rescued from an oven. If they die, you have dinner.

Oh and speaking of crappy, I'm fairly sure they have black crappies sometimes too.

This is true, but I am a devout hobbyist and I love native fish, I just dont see myself eating my babies.

But I want to make this trip , do they have them now? or is it better to go in the spring?

They carry various species of live fish year round. I used to live in NYC (Staten Island specifically), but go to school at Notre Dame. I was last in the city the week after Christmas. I saw eels, carp, tilapia, hybrid striped bass, turtles (only RES I think), and frogs. You could try your luck- you have to walk into the store fronts to see what they have in the tanks. Oh and have them net a fish out of the tank for you. The ones they take out to display flop around a bit and look lively, but being out of water for even a minute will decrease its odds of survival since you need to transport back to Queens.

Im gonna check out it sometime in spring break. I'll take the trip into manhatten and go around "Chinatown" and go snooping around inside of fish markets looking for any worthy fish that need rescue.:nilly:

I actually purchased a high quality FH from the aquarium on the corner of Mott and Broome a few years back. I went in there the other day, and the condition of the tanks were horrendous. I felt soo bad for fish. The owner seems like a bit of a pain! He just sits there smoking cigarettes with his legs crossed, then gives u an attitude whenever u ask him for a price on specific fish. He has 2 huge tanks in the window. One is rediculously overstocked with about (no exxageration) about 500 parrot fish, and the other has a combination of FH's and central/south american cichlids. There was this one orange/white midas that was in the big tank. It was very nice with a big head. I asked the owner how much, and he had the nerve to tell me $800! I told him "why so much, its just a midas cichlid" He told me it was a midas/flower horn. I have owned several Fh's and i currently own a 11" midas. I know the difference. I just walked out shaking my head. Be carefull if u go there. He tends overprice his fish.

There are 2 aquarium shops that i go to frequently in NYC. On is on Delancey between Allen and Eldridge, and the other is called New World Aquarium, located on 38th street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. Both carry a wide variety of products and fish.

Indeed i felt so bad for those parrot fish. he had 2 parrots that you could get on aquabid for like 100-200 and he was selling them for 1,300. He had some quality flowerhorns but way over priced. Even the tank a 75 gallon tank for 432:nilly: while at petland they go for around 100. They had 3 bonsai green terrors and i asked him how much and he said 400 and the tanks seemed clean except for a few of the flowerhorn tanks. Poor parrots there were like 500 of them in a 55 gallon.
