I want to use black sand as a subtrate.and possibley put a cichlid or two with a large pleco in there.

Your not gonna be able to fit any monsters in there... But it would make a great planted discus or angelfish setup. You could do something like this
-9 rummynose tetras
-4 discus (but im no discus expert)
-BN or Gold nugget pleco
-Some sort of dwarf cichlid, or maybe even a female con.

Growout a colony of Marlboro Discus in that tank...

If want predator...Then go for Puffers.....A pair of Convict cichlids will fill up that Hexo nicely....Maybe an Ornate Bikir or two....

OR...

Plant it...Thick and bushy with a mother Amazon Sword Plant as the centerpiece....Have 2 dozen Dwarf Puffers swim amongst the underwater forest....Toss in a dozen Fancy Guppies....Have them breed, producing a natural food source for the Dwarves....

Disagree with the Ornate

Things that work in that footprint:

Angelfish
Apistogrammas
ONE eel, even saltwater depending on the eel
rope fish
shell dwellers

small cichlids would be okay a large pleco wouldn't be very comfy in there though unless it wants to spend it's whole life vertical. I would go with more of a community tank with some angels and some tetras or maybe some smaller barbs. Or if you have to have something aggressive maybe some exodons

Maybe this would be a good opportunity to try your hand at saltwater? It would make a wonderful display tank, and you could get a beastly EEL so you would still have a monster!

That's almost the exact tank I started out in the hobby with. I inheirited it from my friends dead grandma may she rip. If only she could see me now lol.

exodons are cool, like mini pirahna. Jewel cichlids are cool, you could have a little colony of them... i still stand by saltwater and a snowflake eel... they are awesome! Kind of like the cornsnake of the fish world.
