Yes I think it is more suited to smaller fish.
Maybe just add a few leaves and a few botanicals. You should be able to clean the substrate easily with just a small scattering.

Yes except maybe walnut. They may be safe but the tree carries toxins so may not be worth the risk.If you don’t have oak you can use magnolia, alder, Apple, almond. Walnut maybe?
I have a magnolia tree in my backyard. Magnolia grandifolia. Lots of leaves. Beautiful all the time, specially when it blooms.
