im stuck ! i can either buy an oaxaca cichlid and have it with my severum and JD or i can keep my boring midas buy him self in a 100 Gallon tank ... i personally think the tank is being wasted , the midas isn't very active so the tank is kinda boring to look at :irked: . i will also make a poll , has anyone ever kept oaxaca cichlids ? i did my research also lol i just can't decide . the oaxaca looks good but im kinda attached to the midas . could i keep a pair of cons with the oaxaca ? or even a electric blue lobster ? or will the oaxaca get beaten up and lose ? or could i keep the oaxaca with a female midas and severum

Depends on what you want. I personally don't like to have a single fish swimming in circles in an empty aquarium... I like movement and watching the interaction between different fish is priceless - so I'd go with the vieja/severum/jack dempsey. But I've seen people here with big aquariums and a single fish or "wet pet".

Yes you can keep a pair of convicts in there just make sure there's a lot of hiding spots... the other fish might or might not need them when they breed.

As for the blue crayfish... def not. If you want crayfish in a cichlid tank then get the cheap $2 ones. It will be shred to pieces as soon as it molts... or as soon as you put it in the aquarium if your fish are big enough. Def wouldn't spend over $20 on a single fish meal lol. If the crayfish is too big it will try and eat anything it can catch tho.

okay thanks , ill pick up the vieja sometime this weekend and the others later this week . lool okay i'll try to some cheap 2$ ones from my friend who breeds them , i doubt a 11inch vieja will be hiding from a few 4'' cons lool but yeah i have a castle , a few plants and lotssss of flowerpots in there . so there shouldn't be any probs . will the JD be too aggressive for the severum ? should i get a oscar or a pair of firemouth instead ?

Breeding convicts couldn't care less about size. They will still tag team and nip and scratch whatever comes close to their fry... even if they get beaten while doing so. They're fierce little fish lol

Example (breeding convicts attacking 3 Oscars - each around 5 times their size... of course this tank is extremely small so they really had no choice)

JD and severum are fine... my guess is they will ignore each other. If you get an Oscar you will be overstocked... too much waste. Firemouths would be fine but they can be annoying if there's any smaller fish in the tank.

1 JD
1 Severum
1 Vieja zonata
2x Convict
2x Firemouth

I think that could work in a 100 gal with the right filtration and enough decor to break territories.

lol my midas killed my male convict because it was defending its babies :/ hopefully the same thing won't happen . i really love my fish :P i will definitely try that stock ! the smallest fish in the tank will be my pleco and convicts . thanks for your help man !

I almost got a beautiful 7" Rotkeil severum for $27 recently... but the shipping was too much for a single fish and my tank is already full. The oaxaca is not nearly as common but other Vieja cichlids go for $20-$60 at adult sizes so I guess I'd pay anything in that range. Depends on how much I want it and of course my budget lol. How much are they charging?

they are charging $40 for the oaxaca and $20 for the severum . i still have to buy decorations , the JD , firemouths and maybe another filter lol i'm not trying to spend more than 120$ on everything

Jd go for 3.99 at petsmart, get the best looking juvenile and just let it grow. They grow pretty fast.. no need to buy an adult fish. Firemouths for 2.50.. you can buy some decor but prob not a filter. Whats ur current filtration?
