Obtaining a Piranha permit in NY

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it says exhibition only but does it say for public or private I haven't read it, I mean, I have a exhibition of fish in my home....? really all depends on how far you want to take it.

apparently it doesnt cost anything and is fairly easy to obtain. i sent the application in. ill keep u updated when i hear something.

just talked to dec. they will not give out a permit for home display. it has to be public exhibition only. like display in a fish store. ect.. i mentioned a have a display at work and that wasnt good enough either.

All piranhas belong to those groups though.
Not quite there is also Pristobrycon and Pygopristis both of which are VERY VERY rare in the hobby and are alot more omnivorous than the other piranhas. And they don't really look like piranhas much more like silver dollars.

I treid pointing that out earlier but someone else insisted that permits can be obtained for home aquariums. Good thing i don't live in new york but hopefully those who do get the right information.

I forgot most of my biology classes by now but I did a bit of hunting around anyway. The pyistobrycon are a subfamily member of serrasalminae which include wimples, pacu and from what im skimming our lovely friendly bucktooth tetras. I can see 2 of the 3 being legal at least from what I know from other illegal piranha states.

Feel free to call me an idiot or tell me im stating whats already known :nilly:

buck tooth tetras are not serasalmines.

go check out OPEFE.com for what exactly a serrasalmine is.

pristobrycon is a genus not a subfamily, serrasalminae is a subfamily.

Piranhas include Pygopristis, Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus, Pristobrycon, and debatably Catoprion as well. Everything else in the serrasalminae subfamily is either a pacu or silver dollar.
