I just started feeding my SA/CA children this product yesterday. My understanding is that it is primarily composed of Brine and Krill, but also has a several other components - likely in less substantial quantities. Its a frozen cube type food. Obviously there are a million varieties of frozen food, I only bring this one up because of the "gel" aspect. It advertises itself as having a gel-like binder in the mix to keep the cube from disintegrating into tiny fragments. Fragments that will likely not be eaten, and which will simply add to the debris in the filter.

When I dissolved them in a Dixie cup of my tank water I was surprised to see that 10 mins had passed, but the cube remained intact. I probed it with a butter knife, and it seemed like the consistency of semi-frozen peanut butter. I sliced the two cubes into quarters and tossed them into the tank, and the fish went wild as usual, except that the quarter-cube pieces were eaten whole without anyone spitting them out..... I would assume - given their tiny brains - that their dietary habits boil down to a balance of a ravenous instinct to consume, and their body's physiological responses to said consumption. e.g. the Oscar eats an enormous serving of food, only to regurgitate it moments later.

Why would a binding agent have this effect? Obviously I like the idea of minimizing the flow of uneaten "stuff" to my filter. I'm just slightly concerned that them being able to eat and keep such large portions of frozen food may make them more prone to bloat, or getting "clogged up".

Thanks.

The LFS's answer was just babble about how binding agents are harmless. Which wasn't even the question.
