IN FISH PARADISE
i have a 50 Gallon tank and i wanna make it for an octopus ( red sea one ) and i was wondering about what is the best for it .. i googled alot for any infos but couldn't find any .. so please please help me with some info about the octopus needs and the best aquarium for him .. i ll have only 1 may be with some other small inverts or damsels sth small ..

i even can't find a pic for that kind i want ...

What do you mean by red sea one?? In a fifty you can put two o. mercs but not rlly anything else

i was told that there is only 1 kind in the red sea which is sth gray and spotted .. but it can be colored like the reef next to him ..

but why nth else ??? its 1 meter long and 50 cm deep and 50 cm height cant it at least take 1 damsels or even 1 butterfly or 2 clowns with anemone ?!

It's best to keep a single octopus by itself because any other living thing that's kept with it can and will be injured/maimed/killed/eaten in no time at all. You'll have to make sure that the top of the aquarium is perfectly sealed since an octopus can and will escape through an opening the size of its eye. They're very strong, so the cover will need to be weighted down sufficiently. As you can see, HOB filters and skimmers are a very poor choice for an octopus aquarium, and a sump is preferred, especially if your aquarium is drilled.

Think of an octupus as if it was an immensely strong small child: it wants to explore and check out anything and everything yet can also move relatively heavy objects in comparison to its body size.

MAke sure that the lid fits tight and that all holes, drainage, filter, etc are blocked with something stronger than mesh. I had a worker at the New England aquarium tell me a funny story about how their 30 pound giant pacific octopus escaped through a hole 2 inches wide. It then went into another tank and devoured everything inside. Just some food for thought

Have mesh over all the holes incase of it having tentacles being sucked into the holes. Put a weight on the top or over the open holes put indoor outdoor carpeting I heard they dislike it and it deflects them. I have done tons of research on keeping a octo and am working on beginning a tank myself. He is best kept alone you can try some hermits and stuff for cleaners depending on the octo and how he reacts to roomates they may survive most likely not unless they r fed rlly well. The only octo pus in the trade that I am aware of and have had recommended that you have a good chance of getting is the o.merc and in a 50 gallon you can keep two but they are nocturnal and won't be out much in the day until they get use to there home. And you can add toys to the tank like ping pong balls or a crab in a jar with a small hole cut for them to work into and get the crab. Feel free to message me I have a lot of research put in on octopus's although ive never kept one and know a great sight you may wantt o ask questions on.

thanks alot guys u r very helpful thanks for all that info ...

fishy12 : i have 2 questions left

- do u know the red sea one ?? not the pacific one ?

- how can they breed ??

Octopus breed on there own in the tank some pairs do some don't sexing them is tricky because they males have 1 are that are slightly shorter then the other but not by much.

And I don't think I beleive I know which one you mean by red sea one. You may check tonmo.com for more help sorry its been so long without a response ive been really busy and even have been lacking a little in my own fish world... : ( Of you already set up let me know how its going

O. cyanea is present in most of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Hawaii.
Maybe that´s the one the OP is mentioning
