octopus aquarium !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would definitely recommend a larger tank that 50g. I would be looking at a 120 at least - you will need caves and stuff for it to dwell in. I am just not sure you can form all that in a 50g and grow the octopus at the same time.

And you will need a really good skimmer! An octopus I am assuming is as messy as a turtle. hehe

sorry to derail... but just a quick question... how hard would it be to keep say a blue ring octopus or mimic octopus in a tank that size (if even possible)? only reason i ask is coz i've seen them for sale here and always wondered if it would actually be possible to keep them alive long term in a mid sized tank?

I don't recommend blue rings they are poisonous and not a very good octopus to keep. If you are looking for a octopus check for a 50gal check into o.merc they are dwarfs and you could put a pair maybe 3 in the tank with that size assuming there are enough areas to make caves for them. But they are usually nocturnal and only come out at night or under red lights. I know a bimac can be housed in a 50gallon but they require a chiller and heavy filtration like all octopus do. I suggest a good skimmer and a sump for best results with a octopus.

Here is a helpful care sheet and website on cephalapods.

^ Yeah, i realize Blue Rings are deadly poisonous, which is probably why they appeal to me... especially since i don't have kids or any pets that would be able to eat one if it ever did climb come out of the tank by accident...

Although with that being said, i was just really more curious if it would be possible to house one long term... since till this day i'm still debating if i should go to the dark side when my Polleni dies, or if i should turn my 60G into a planted sulawesi shrimp tank instead...

Anyway, thanks for the info and links...

Blue rings are very short lived in home aquarium. And there is no anti venom for a blue ring yet also they are very deadly in a few minutes. They also only have spots when threatens and other wise are a full color

When you say short lived how short would you guess they normally last in home aquaria?

And i realize one bite and its lights out but thanks for the heads up all the same :)

Also would you be able to keep more than one in a 60 since they are so small? Maybe 2 or 3?

I'm also going to add the disclaimer that yes, i've probably got more than a few loose screws for wanting to keep these guys...

Most octopus live about 12 to 18 months they live 6 and no they have to be solo house it would take a very big tank with a lot of caves around to keep multiple ones

Cool thanks for the info... I guess no tank mates right due to either getting bitten or being turned into food?

Yea small tank mates like snails and hermits can be used to help cycle your tank but may or may not get eaten

Cool thanks for all the info... Will give me something to think about...
