I have recently started a new 130g tank with sand substrate. I have populated it with fish from a 20g tank, including my pleco of 6".

I am now learning that I haven't been feeding him well. I will be working on IDing him and improving his diet.

Since I have relocated him, he has started an odd behavior. Every 10-15 min or so, he goes to the surface, make a smacking noise at the top, then returns to the bottom. He never did this in the old tank. I'm looking for ideas on what this should be telling me. Am I not getting enough oxygen in the water? Not getting the same food because the tank is not well established? Something else? FWIW, the tank has been running for about 8 weeks, 4 with fish. It is minimally populated, with 4 2" danios and 2 3" angels.

Thanks for your thoughts.

When I first transferred my 6" pleco from a 30 gallon to a 55 gallon, I saw him do the very same thing a few times. It lasted only a day or two, but that could be partly because the Dempsey in the tank keeps him pretty much in the cave most of the time.

I have even seen plecos in videos hanging upside down at the waters surface.

I'm guessing that he is just celebrating his inreased space. The 20 gal was getting a bit tight for him. I really enjoy seeing him swim in open water - graceful creatures!
