odd bricks found

old bricks would be a terracotta or clay base not cement.... post some pix but after a boil they will be fine

Not sure why this thread was moved as this has nothing to do with tank setup and filtration, we're talking about pleco breeding caves but ok.

Sorry the pic took a couple days but life happens. The brick is 16" deep so I'd have to cut it. I'm sure a few of these cut up bad boys would make excellent pleco caves. (for small species of course). The look clay based to me. Now that you all have seen it does it appear inert? Probably safe to use?

that's awesome! i wish i could come across some, i can't imagine a smaller fish that wouldn't love those.

looks like a standard baked clay brick (terra cotta) you should be fine.

I'm thinking it's clay also, which makes me excited because there are at least 20 back there. Now, let's suppose that after I cut it I wanted to paint/color it? Any suggestions on what would be safe?

idk if bricks are made of cement but cement is toxic to freshwater fish
:screwy:No it isn't. The sudden shifts in TDS are (it is not really pH shifts that are dangerous, but sudden changes in Total Dissolved Solids screws with water pressure and the osmoregulation of the fish)

Any paint product that would be safe underwater?
Krylon "FUSION" has been used on all sorts of decor with excellent results...
It is formulated to paint plastic without priming. It would work great on brick. It is safe and non-toxic when dried...
