Odd fahaka behavior?

UPDATE

I heard some splashing from the living room and rushed in to see the fahaka going nuts. When I turned on the lights he calmed down a little and stopped splashing. I then went and got my test kit and started testing water. As I was testing I looked over and he was passing a parasite I think.

It was a clearish long stringy poop with solid clumps every few millimeters or so. It was about 6" long.

Then today when I got up he was out and about and has eaten 2 peices of shrimp allready today. :headbang2

So I am 99% sure this is what was causing the wierd behaviour. He was on his second dose of jungle labs parasie clear. Which is prazi and a few other parasite specific medications. The distress he was having while passing it must have been from pain I guess.

Thanks to everyone. And I will keep you all updated for the next week or so. As i plan to complete the parasite med course just incase.

Two treatments of Jungle PC should be ample, I would perform a substantial water change, and let this fish recoup from all of the meds that have been thrown at it. JMO

Glad to hear that it's doing better.

Yeah, i agree with all that. I would simply stop feeding live foods. I have kept some fish for 6 to 8 years at a time without any medications being administered, until introducing live food sources. They simply dont need them, nor do you need to put your animals at what I would call a pretty huge and unnesecciary risk.

I have been feeding live foods to all my fish for >30 years. You still might want to post this up at my forum. Lots of knowledgeable pufferkeepers there.

That may be Jeni, but when I read ....... "and live crayfish when in season 2x weekly. In the colder months he gets fiddler crabs in place of the crays."

I took that to mean live food that has not been raised by the OP themself.
Live foods such as crayfish (collected from the wild, or purchased at baitshops) are notorious for carrying pathogens, pathogens that most puffers have no natural immunity for.

So i guess the wild population of puffers has been totally eradicated from eating there natural diet of fish and shell fish?

Cause to my knowledge most puffers are still wild caught.

The pathogens that are naturally present in a creek in Kentucky, can vary vastly from those found in a river in Africa.

Your fish, your prerogative what & how you feed it.

Good luck .......

I get all my crays from my LFS, which are farm-raised. I have bought many earthworms from bait shops & my LFS. Also farm-raised.
