Odd geophagus behavior, trying to breed???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea I do my water changes on Sundays too. a few times got caught up watching football and over filled tanks. wife calls sundays...wetdays

I was hoping for a good update... Got home tonight and the hole is 80% filled in, the colors no where near as bright as last night. And they are just chasing others away now. :irked: Really sorry guys....

I promised some pics so here are some crappy ones I just took about an hour ago. You can see the hole I was referring to below next to the wood. They are pretty much just chasing anyone away from the mostly filled in hole they created and not showing any of the behavior they did last night.

I will be waiting for some fry!

You, Kee and one of my employees will be getting all you want once I get the tank moved around and "suitable" for the pair to spawn and actually get some fry.

just a matter of time, since you know you have a pair that are interested in each other ;)

Yeah at least I have a pair, that was more than I thought I would end up with so I'm happy. I have allot of work to do to make this tank suitable for breeding... ;) To start I need to get rid of my plecos and Amblydoras Nauticus. No eggs will ever survive the night in with those three. For all I know they may have actually spawned and the eggs were eaten.

I put a for trade add up in the NW marketplace, hopefully someone takes them so I can try my hand at breeding.

Thanks again guys! Justin-

My Dicrozoster did the same thing a few times. I actually got to see them do the deed at one point. Never got any fry out of them though.

I feel that the biggest issue is teh fact that they constantly have to fight off the other fish. If you're serious about breeding them I'd try getting them into a tank of their own.

Thank you sincerely for the advice. They are going to have to stay in the 225g for now though. I only have one other tank right now and it is being set up to accomodate breeding, just not for the abalios, I have other plans. :grinno: Hopefully removing the plecs/cats will give them a better fighting chance but I won't get my hopes up for a while.

The extensive pit, head quivering, and nudging the side of their mate are all classic Geophagus courting behaviors. If you don't have medium-large river stones, I would introduce some to the territory, they'll prefer to breed on those. It won't disrupt them. The female will pick up the eggs immediately after fertilization.

Good luck, I'd like to see some pictures/video of the courting behaviors and breeding coloration.

Ed

Here is a vid from the P&S tonight, shows them prepping a new rock. Turns out I have one male and two females. The one with the longer filaments on the tail/cleaning the rock is the newly discovered female.

The battery on the camera is charging but I should be able to get more of the actual courting tonight once it charges up.
