I have picked up a pair of sevs, sold through a LFS as "red-shouldered sevs". Still relatively small (3-4") but not looking quite like any of type of sev that I've come across before. They definately have the red shoulder starting to develop but they have virtually no vertical barring at all, even when stressed, and just don't look like the rotkeils I am familiar with. I was thinking maybe rottie x gold ? Although had read somewhere that the gold is recessive so should come out pretty much as a rottie x green would. Any ideas ? It's the almost complete lack of vertical barring that's puzzling me. The male shows a tiny bit. The female not at all. Here they are. The female first, then the male.

my LFS had a tank full of adult rotkeils that were like this, absolutely no barring at all but had the red around the shoulder/neck area, they reminded me of normal green domestic severums that had a red neck.

my lfs has these labelled as 'Heros Appendiculatus/Orange Neck Severums'

Definitely not Rotkeil Severums.

mine is the same way, a couple of small splotches but no barring. Here's a crummy pick

In one of My LFS they have a wild pair. The Male looks like your Male one but the female has slightly visable bars. They are about 5'' So maybe its a wild pair of Rotties??

Not sure about the ID but both are definitely beautiful fish, how much did you get them for?

I had almost an entire spawn of severums turn out this way except for the red neck. The male was a turquoise (yes, I know, they are all considered greens now) and the female was a weird gray barless severum with a bright red anal fin and dark red spots throughout her body. Despite dad having bars, almost all the fry had zero bars and ended up being gray and spotted like the female.
