odd severum behavior

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It could be a territorial thing or a pre-spawning display. 3" is really small for a breeding severum; most are at least 5 - 6" before spawning. It could be that the fish is a bit stunted? Was it this size when you got it?

Sometimes twitching is also a sign of being irritated by something on the body or in the water. It could be external parasites, high dissolved organics in the water, etc. My discus also do this a lot after water changes -- I think the dissipating chlorine in the new water makes them a bit twitchy until the Prime does its job.

the 3" sev was about 2" when i bought it a month and a half ago
i will do a water change tomorrow and see if it causes them to stop

Have you noticed them changing colors? What type of severum are they?

Normally, spawning severums will go into breeding dress. The bodies usually go dark, the eyes turn fluorescent, and the bellies of the fish will look white. If it's pre-spawning behavior, you should observe them cleaning the site they've chosen and randomly displaying for each other (flared fins and gills, swimming in front of each other, tail-slapping, etc.).

no color change as of yet, they are following each other around but thats it i'm beggining to thinl it is more territorial than anything else but only time will tell
