It is a 55 gallon, I normaly change 15g then fill it back up... However I have 2-3 day old fry in there now and I dont want the water slashing down from the filters to blast them all around the tank.

First 5gal water change would take out 5 gal old water.

Second 5 gal water change would take out 4.5455gal old water and 0.4545gal new water from last change.

Net old water changed would be 9.5455gal.

Burt :)

P.S. Of course this assumes that the tank actually holds 55 gal of water, which really is not the case, it would be less.

i must be missing something here..why would you take 5 out, put 5 in then take 5 out again? Just take out what you need to all at once then add your fresh water

I don't think you could technically figure it as 7.5 gallons without first knowing the size of the tank the water would be dispersed into.

Well I was thinking that if he needed to add 5 gallons back to the tank, it would be around 10 gallons because two 5 gallons would mean an empty tank.

Turn filters off then. Do 15g,refill and turn filters back on. Really this is pretty simple.

Second this. I do that just because I don't feel like getting soaked by splashing water by my FX5 when I change my water.
