yeah im going to order 3 or 4 from rich

im going to give it a try with my firemouth. need to get the odoe beefed up alittle.

i did read a few things about odoes biting and ripping out other fishes stomachs. i better hope mine doesnt do that. it seemed like the bichirs were goo tank mates because they predominantly stay on the bottom.

Link? I'd love to read about this...... :screwy:

Like I said, half the info out there is BS.

this was the thread i read it it. two people mentioned the same behavior. theres also an other where the guys odoe hasnt caused any problems.

i dont think that alot of stuff is total BS. just that all fish behave differently. i know pike cichlids and they have this rap of being super aggresive. and some are and some arent, but the views most people have is that they're super aggresssive and the facts are that they really arent.

db junkie... u seem to be knowledgeable with these fish. i read another thread where u were criticizing putting one odoe in a 180. dont wanna open up the debate. but i think i remember u saying that the fish only live for 5 years cuz there stuck in such a small tank. everything ive read online has said they only live 5 years. i understand some stuff is BS. do u know a different max life span for these fish?

Your link doesn't work.

Was I criticizing putting ONE in a 180 or a SHOAL in a 180?

All I said is that you never see them in big tanks and maybe this contributes to premature death.

I never meant to leave the impression that they can outlive thier lifespan. Everything I've read leads me to believe that they are not being taken care of properly if the max size they achieve in captivity is so much different then what they obtain in the wild.

Is thier max lifespan 5 years in tanks AND in the wild? I don't know.....

I don't know all that much about these fish. All I know is what I have experienced. None of this "well one guy had this happen" or "my buddy" stories.... Cause often times there are no proof of these stories.

My problem with the Odoe debate is this.....

People assume they stay small and house accordingly. All I'm saying is pretend you know NOTHING about the max size of the fish. Taking into account thier sometimes skittish behavior you would give them a large tank. But no one does. My debate is what happens IF you do? I wasn't able to find anyone with experience keeping them in a huge enviroment. Leading me to wonder what happens if you do? Do they get bigger? Do they live longer?

If you've kept fish long enough you eventually figure out that the way they are raised sometimes impact the way they act later in life leading different people to have different experiences. IF everyone kept Oscars in 20 gallon tanks what do suppose thier "max size in an aquarium" would be?

edit: link doesnt want to work. google hepsetus odoe. its like the fifth one down, forum thread from ***********.

what do you or anyone else advise as a minimum tank size for the fish? id like to say something in the 125 gallon range. i agree that most fishes growth get stunted. even the people with the big tanks. i bet alot of the fish have stunted growth, except the few people with maybe 10,000 gallon plus tanks. i think a bigger factor is stunting fish growth with too small of a tank is just bad maintenance, and a failure to keep the water quality high. which i think just occurs more with a smaller tank. jsut my thoughts.

would like other peoples opinions on minimum tank size for a single specimen of this fish?
