Odoe and tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One thing I noticed with my old big odoe was they were especially fond of streamlined silver fish over other fish. Id feed shiners and goldfish every so often and they would target the minnows first. Also beware because ive seen them strike decent size minnows and it looks like someone cut them in half with a razor after a quick flash from the odoe. Id wait until you figure it must be safe... then wait another month lol

Ok Harley I will show you mine but you got to show me yours:

Gorgeous fish!
Promise kept: Odoe were found to eat prey between 7-72% of their own body length (average 40%). Meaning your 12-14'' Odoe will potentially consume fish up to 10''. Your cudas would be dinner.

I think girth is a big key, mine is in with a variety of tankmates though below 40% and up. Got a convict and electric yellow about half his size that don't get messed with. As well as had a small thin silver dollar about 1/4 his size when first introduced. No marks on anything so far, it's been a few months. But then again I had mine straight pellets right away from small size that might make a difference. I've had feeders that never got eaten in there for other fish that we're never touched and ended up dying a week or so later cause of the overflow. Don't wanna jinx anything but even right now the thin bar is 1/4 his size and nothing; I'm attributing a lot to good girth. I wouldn't put anything half his girth though. Everything is over half as tall though. Just an alternate view tho

Is this a future breeding project?

Time will tell ;) They reach sexual maturity in their second year, and I have a 220 gal waiting for them. It'd be cool, but I'm not holding my breath.

Have they been captive bred???

The only report I am aware of: Back in 2009, on a German fish site, a German guy named Bernd reported spawning in his 190 gal tank. He housed 3 footlong odoe with 3 oscars. A pair formed and he had to remove one of the odoe. The oscars remained in the tank but were bullied into a corner. The odoe built a 13'' diameter foam nest and he successfully raised the fry.

Wow, that is interesting.... not how i would have expected them to breed at all.... Thanks
