stupid title I know ;)
Whats up guys, just curious about Odoe pikes, been researching and it seems general size in aquaria isn't known/discussed much...what are the chances I could keep a small odoe in a 150 gallon for at least a year or so? This goes hand in hand with my ray's for a 310 gallon tank thread because by next year my 310 will be freed up and ready for a small ray or two (did my due diligence in species choice, so no I wont be stuffing a motoro in the tank) and I'd like to get an odoe growing before the tank is ready. I just wanted someone who has kept them for a while to chime in on general growth rate/size.
Thanks!

HarleyK HarleyK had a breeding pair not long ago, he might be the resource you need.

right on! thanks! no names came to mind when I thought about the species haha

Yeah if I hadn't seen the thread I couldn't point you to another person. That said, I know little about them.

I've raised close to a half dozen groups of them.... Currently have 6 in a 300. Tankmates are 5 wolves (4 iguaza 1 intermedius) Jardini Aro, Black Aro, Vatf, Tatf, and a pair of rays. Will be moving Wolves out soon though as well as the Tatf as they're getting big enough the wolves are looking at the Odoe like food and the Tatf is trying to take over the tank so he's going to go join some larger Tigers.

They're remarkably quick growers up to about 8-10" then slow down. Most top out around 12-14". My thoughts are a 2' tank would work for life although 3' would be better.

I've found they do best in groups. Never had issues with them harassing tank mates, although my current group of 6 is being stalked by wolves and ATF, but never had a single "mean" Odoe like I always hear about, BUT I've also never kept a single fish, always groups of 3+

I look at these guys the same as stuff like freshwater Cuda, Tats, Scombs, PTC in the sense that they are not apex predators, so tank mates need to be carefully selected as Odoe are usually on picked on rather then the ones doing the picking. Best to set the tank up around them and let them be apex of the tank. They seem calmer, less skiddish and feed better this way. IF stressed they can be easily forced off or away from food.

GREAT ray tank mates as they stay at the top.

They HATE current, so if keeping in a ATF or Goonch style environment with tons of current/turnover you can expect them to keep smashing into the lids or sides of the tank trying to escape where the current comes from.

Very easy to get off live, BUT prove kinda tough to get onto pellets, seems like a texture thing.... But they can be broke, mine enjoy carny sticks with such charisma that I often end up soaked.

VERY under-rated fish. I don't think I've been without a group since the very first group I kept many many years ago.

IF I missed anything just ask , I'll do my best to answer....

haha man DB you've got the info for both my threads, right on. They'd be sharing the 150 with some polys, a eupterus, 2 Ctenopomas and a squad of CL's. Only issue I forsee is the smaller loaches becoming a snack but theres nothing aggressive to cause them any stress in that tank.

I generally feed tilapia and pellets so if they never quite get onto pellets I wouldn't be upset by any means, as long as I can get them on frozen I've got no worries.

When it comes to rays and Characins you could say I have "a little" experience..... lol

Frozen is super simple to get them on. Once off live I doubt they'd even look at the Loaches as food. They'll rarely cross paths as Odoe only go to the bottom of the tank for food. Mine seem to stay in the upper 8" of the tank rarely leaving the surface.

haha yes you have a bit of experience with the two species and all I guess hahaha jk man I appreciate the help,

I prefer to not be that guy who makes the thread titled "Help I just bought a 'insert large or capable of large sizes fish here' and now its acting funny! I have it in a 55 gallon!"

Where do you get your groups from when you do buy them? I'm going to make a run to my local LFS's tomorrow I think and check them out, they are good about having rarer fish in most of the time, but if I strike out there I'd like a good place to get them online.

My last group came from Josh (ray 777 on here) Tanks of Fish on bookface. Jojo (Ichibahn Asia Tropical on here) is also a good source and good guy to deal with.

I do NOT have the luxury of getting anything from LFSs around here. I have to order everything I keep.

Db hit everything just about spot on. My experience is with a single specimen so maybe that's where it varies slightly, she's also the second ,argent fish not far behind mr curu, though she's the only one I've kept. Her growth rate was very fast up until 10 inches, then she began to grow in girth a lot and her colors started to pop. Got her in February at 3-4 inches, she's currently 11 eyeballing, I know for a fact she's above 10. She began to show some territorial behavior around 8 inches, though she's relaxed more so now, occasionally gets into quick squabbles with my mala and curu. It's goes back and forth between who initiates it, I believe it's because they're practically the only fish that swim around though. I have 3 bichirs that rarely move much when food isn't present. I was worried and questioned getting rid of him before due to the fact that both fish are very capable of hurting one another and there was constant missing scales for awhile, things have settled some since and fighting hasn't been as serious or as frequent. Hoping for it to stay that way. I'm keeping them in a 120 standard. I'm sure in a larger setup this would be less frequent if any aggression would occur at all. Everything is going fairly good as of now though. Any specific questions feel free to ask
